Did those fires die when you closed the door?

Your breakin fires are not complete then.

Sound like you have very poor draft or your air control is not opening up. You may try looking under the stove were the air control is to see if the rod is working to open and close it.

A proper break-in fire for a hearthstone is to make the stove warm to the touch, then shut it down and let it cool back to room temperature. This should be done every year or you risk breaking a stone.

I was reading that. I thought myself, I would do more then one break-in fire on a new stove, being that stove is going to be with you for a long time. I hope Brian lets us know what he finds out about his fires going out, once the door had been closed.

How could he warm the stones up to break them in if the fire dies when he shuts the door?

500F stove top temp on that big rock is plenty warm.

Did you try opening a nearby window or door about an inch to see if that helps? Or is it possible that something is restricting or blocking the air intake? It would be worth doing a visual check.

Glad we could help nice work.

Thanks to everyone for their advice and guidance.
It turns out that the primary air control lever was not hooked up. Just built a fire as we have a cold front moving in and the Equinox is functioning perfectly.
Cheers!
Wow, shame on Hearthstone!!!!!!!!!!!

Is there anyway you could post some pics of that stove? I like the looks of the Equinox. Freaking BIG.

That's a surprising oversight on Hearthstone's quality inspection. Would it be possible to photograph this linkage and post a picture here to help others? Was this a dealer install? If so, they also dropped the ball here.

Also, I want to know if the Equinox ash pan housing needed to be removed to reattach the linkage. I had to do that with the Heritage.

Hearthstone does not appear to have any QC whatsoever. It's a nicely designed stove that apparently is built and shipped in a hurry without a second look. It's really a shame because they're a nice stove when they get it right.

I don't know about that. I've seen a bunch of Hearthstones, I've run one myself, and I've known several that have owned them. All stoves can ship with issues. From Lopi, to PE, to Quadradire. Hearthstone seems to be in line with the other manufacturers when it comes to production errors.

It happens. And when it comes to the linkage, I can easily see how it could happen if the Equinox air controls are built like the Heritage.
