I'm comfortable recommending either. It really depends on your lifestyle and the look you want. From a heating perspective, both will do the job well. The cat has an advantage by being able to burn cleaner at a low setting during the shoulder seasons when temps are mild. Instead, we burn short hot fires and let the fire go out once the area is comfy. During the main heating season, they are on par.

You'll have to decide what works best for your living situation. In our house my wife often runs the stove during the daytime. She is not as attentive as I am and is more timid about stoking a large fire, so she burns 2-3 splits at a time. I do all the maintenance. Given these parameters I opt for KISS. Our stove is very forgiving and very simple to run and maintain. There is no bypass to remember, nor do I have to worry about someone inadvertently damaging the cat. End of season cleaning is a 15 minute job.

That said, if you are the only one running the stove and you are at work during the day and want to have a low burn going while you are away, a cat stove may be preferable.

Or this one: http://www.woodstove.com/keystone It says up to only 1300 sf, but looks like nearly 2 cf box. Looks nice, price in New England is decent right now, but shipping may be high. Some real Woodstock fans here.

Am I aiming a bit too small with these selections? This is seems like a really efficient house so far.

There are many whop prefer the Keystone. Size is close but a bit smaller than the Fireview. I like the looks of the Fireview the best and the firebox is a bit larger. It will give some longer burns and with the size a bit larger will make it easier loading too. As for size, we constantly see the Woodstock stoves heating more than what the recommended sq ft is. Still, it depends upon insulation. Drafty home, size the stove larger. Good insulation will allow a smaller stove.

I have a 930sq ft house - is the PE vista a good option for me in terms of having a enough heat? The main part of the house is open, with a narrow hallway down to the bedrooms. I've had enough of my ancient Kozi, live in a small Canadian arctic town (Inuvik, just south of the treelike) and a dealer is offering decent prices on the PE vs. the equivalent Blaze Queen (or whatever its called).

Any thoughts?

Welcome to Hearth! I'm not one of the experts here, but have asked the same basic questions and I'm sure you will get the help you need. Here's a few questions that are sure to be asked:
What kind of construction is the house? Well insulated? Do you want the stove to be the primary heat source or a supplement? What other sources of heat do you have? Just how cold does it get there (I'm almost afraid to ask_g )? What size is the old stove in terms of cubic feet and how well did it perform? Is the existing stove pre-EPA or why have you had enough of it? So many variables...

Good luck. You're in the right place.

Bozol, welcome. Can you start a new thread? Your needs are different. You'll get better responses to a new thread.

PS: If you want a PE stove, get the next size up, PE Super 27 or Spectrum. It will provide much longer burn times and reserve heat for the -40F nights. But let's also talk about the BKs in a new thread.
