Something a little different, took down a big oak that was threatening my cabin a couple of years ago... still splitting it for the fire but I left the bottom 8' or so in one piece and dragged it alongside the front path. Yesterday I started shaping it into a bench with an adze I found on ebay (the head is about 100 years old and I put a new hickory handle on it)... before this I'd never even seen an adze much less used one. It's a lot of work; I now have newfound respect for the guys who built cabins of squared logs in the old days!

Still need to smooth it off with my drawknife but it's more or less flat and I have a bunch of big buckets of wood chunks to start the coal stove with...

Hmm...cabins, certainly. I always think of the wooden ships they built back then. Dang near unimaginable. Have fun, be careful, looks good. Rick

One of my cousins barns has hewed beams in it. I always think about the work that went into them.

Couple hundred more and you can build a small cabin :)

Now imagine that work with no chainsaw to do the crosscuts!

A lot of the cabins built here had broad ax work. Either tool was very labor intensive. I love beams like that, but I am too use to the easy life to do that I think.

FanMan, you picked a tough job to start with. Those are not that easy to work with. Keep some extra beverages handy.

Fanman whats the diameter of that log , looks pretty big. Good luck with your adze..
