As noted in my newbie thread, this will be my first year heating with pellets. The stove I am planning on is a timber ridge 55-TRPAH. I don't have any specific criteria to choose by other than it would be nice to have a pellet that didn't cause a lot of exessive cleaning or maintenance - though I also don't want to pay an arm and a leg to save a few minutes. I'd like to stick with one of the deliverable options (so, basically one of the brands from B&B) unless they're all garbage.

So, after some phone calls, this is what is available to me:

Lowes: "unknown" brand of premium hardwood (sales associate claimed they get different brands and she didn't know what they had at the moment, but I know they have TONS in stock - you can see at least a trailer load in their covered storage from the highway) $209/ton, no delivery

Home Depot: Green Supreme $209/ton no delivery

Town & Country: Curran premium hardwood $245/ton (forgot to ask them about a delivery charge!)

Hearth and Home: Dry Creek premium hardwood $265/ton, no delivery

Tractor Supply: Instant Heat premium hardwood $219.50/ton, no delivery

B&B Pellets:
New England Wood Pellets $230/ton
Curran premium hardwood/softwood blend $225/ton
Green Team $245/ton
Cubex $255/ton
flat fee of $20 for delivery

Cubex at $255 is a very good deal, so is the $20 delivery. Greene Team at $245 isn't too bad. Wouldn't touch the other 2 at those prices.

I'll 2nd the Cubex.
Low Ash and very good heat.

Welcome to the forum.

I'm not familiar with your stove and haven't any first hand knowledge of any of your choices but one. NEWP's were very ashy for me. Years ago they were better but I couldn't wait to get rid of my last ton (from last years run)....and still haven't.

My $.02

Cubex is the best of the bunch and a good price
here in Putnam , NY Cubex is $325

It's pretty bad when you live in the town where NEWP's are made and you have 4 tons of MWP on hand. That say's it all.

Ya, lol. I can see the kiln steam (and sometimes smoke...doh!) and hear the drone of the place from my house. I kinda feel bad for not keeping it local....till I see the price and all the ash. I really like these MWP.

As many wise Pellet Pigs have said, " Try a few bags in the stove before buying a ton,." Even the same stove can burn the same pellet differently depending on the set up, installation, etc. Also might think of buying some shoulder pellets- ones that are little cheaper, little less heat for the beginning and end of winter then the Cubex (out of the list you provided) for the real cold months. This will keep your cost down. Just my two cents.

Well, Cubex seems to have won. Maybe I'll get a few bags of the Green Supreme from HD to burn during the "shoulder season."

I have yet to turn on the oil furnace this year, with oil prices up so high I'm hoping I don't have to once the stove is in.

That's a great price for the Cubex so I'd definitely go with those. Where are you from?

I cannot comment on the different brands because I have not tried that many yet. I also purchase on price, until I find a bad brand.
That is a great price for delivery. My sister gets them delivered for $80.00 (two ton at a time) and I have them forklift a ton into my van for free!

I'm located in central NY, near Syracuse. I'm out in the boonies, hence all the "no deliveries" answers I got - B&B are also kind of out in the boonies so I suppose I lucked out on that one!

I know I am an outlier but I do not think Cubex is worth the price. I picked up a bunch of bags last year (my first burning pellets) and was utterly disappointed. Not at all clean, no real difference in heat and I burned the same amount as lower priced pellets for the same level of comfort.

For my money - in my stove and my house - Green Supremes are the best balance of price, low ash, clean burn, low fines and good heat.

Just one opinion.

Would it change anyone's mind now that I know Lowe's has cheat river for $209/ton?

I might buy a few bags to try.

instant heat suck. not hot and ASH city! easily 5x the ash of most other pellets I've used. Id also go with the cubex at the price. they are 290 here!
