Hi all,
I posted a earlier thread about a pellet stove named Forest Stove Co... After tearing apart hopper from stove it looks as thou the hopper was added to a wood stove... Any info I have is that Collins was made to turn any wood burner into a pellet...
Anyone have any info on how these units actually worked????
I'm trying to get it to work as a primary stove with a wood insert as backup..
Thanks

Is this a gravity fed hopper? Into a wood firebox?

This is how some of the 1st pellet stoves operated. Not very efficient though. Do you have any pics?

Yes, that is a exactly what it appears to be. Gravity feed to a hopper then down Shute into converted woodstove.. Motor to auger is run by a chain, and timer is a solid state dual timer.. Pretty simple design, just hoping it works... I bought it for $50 and have to buy new auger motor and timer, but will be into it under $200.... I have a woodstove also, just want two sources of heat....
Try to upload pics this morning...

got it torn down some, but here is what I'm working with.... Collins 4000. Merkle auger motor and solid state timer ckk-60-461.... Anyone with any info on these units????? Any suggestions for optimum heat??

Is that a combustion blower on the hopper? If so, is this a positive pressure unit (most old ones were)?

Make sure all your gaskets are in good condition (replace) and your flue is sealed well.

Yeah, it appears to be a positive pressure stove. Yeah, definetly going to replace all the seals and exhaust pipe...
Just ordered my new motor and timer, so hoping I can get this thing to work :)
Thanks for the advise!!!

Do you suggest taking exhaust down to 3"?? I see most pellet stove are 3"..
I am a metal fab guy so no problem, just thinking a 3" may retain more heat in stove??? What do you think Dexterday?? Anyone??

If it was made with 6" to be begin with, then stick with it.

I have never seen one of these is operation, so I dont know how many CFM the combustion blower is, so it may still rely heavily on natural draft. The 6" will have more surface area as far as heating goes. And the stove will provide the heat to the room.

I have Double wall on my woodstove. I want to keep the flue gases warm. The stove is the heater. The flue is the means in which it operates.

If you used 3" pellet vent, it would be double wall and not get that hot anyways. So stick with what it was designed for.

Any pics of inside the firebox? I am intrigued by this stove. I hope others come along that know more about the particular model. IRRC, Webbie has seen/sold some Stoves like these. There were old threads on some old pellet stoves. Try using the search up top?

Yeah, I can get some pics of inside stove... Some bricks are broken, so need to replace, but have everything it looks like to work... I too am intrigued by this stove and it's now become a challenge to get it going!!! Have not found hardly anything on the Internet about the Collins Hopper.....

As I said, going to need new bricks.... Also flue hole has big thick metal plates ( in pics you can see) that slide to slow or speed up outflow... Tray is actually in decent shape and holes are all open and looks clean for airflow..

Any Luck in getting that collins 4000 hopper to operate....? I have one as well and it's already connected ... I think im missing some internal piece for the pellets to drop in and burn.... I don't know as /I'm unfamiliar with any running of wood stoves....

Here's my Collins 4000 Hopper...Mine is the 3 minute delay hopper...I love it, runs smooth as silk and produces heat as I want it...What a find in the middle of nowhere Montana....was/is attached to a Hurricane wood stove...

Howdy folks,

I'm hoping to find some more information on the Collins Hopper 4000. I did my best Google-fu but couldn't get much more than a few mentions of it being the first pellet burning device and also an obituary for the inventor, Loren who passed away just 4 months ago. My main question is what switch controls the auger speed? I seem to be missing something in my electric controls. I've enclosed some images of what I mean. The first picture is of the controls with the area I zoomed in on circled in red. What goes here?

Hi there......... I had just learned a few weeks ago that Loren had passed..... I'll miss him. I only knew him via my current pellet hopper that he had helped me get up and running...

I could be wrong, but, the collins were conversions for wood stoves, and, possibly for wood furnaces. There also was another manufacturer that did the same thing. No combustion blower was ever added,so full size wood stove flue pipe was required.Their efficiency was not good, even though they worked OK.To run one nowadays means you have more money to burn. But,one would be a collectors item, for people that collect that type of stuff.A cheep farm store stove would give you more heat, and have better burn control. But,it is a classic, for a small part of our country.
