First, I must admit that I'm the lazy sort when spring comes. I didn't sweep my chimney when I cleaned the stove for summer.

In June we had a major hailstorm sweep through and I had to replace the shingles. So, I called a contractor that I've known and trusted for years. He and his crew came over and in less than 2 days stripped my old shingles, put on new with ice barrier under, and they were gone like the wind. 8 of 10 houses needed new roofs from that storm.

Sunday, the 20th I thought I had better sweep the chimney. Ran the brush down and on the way back up, I lifted 9 ft of triple wall out of the roof adapter. When they had removed my chimney to shingle, they didn't get it locked back in place with the lower piece.

So, in the end, it's safer to be lazy. ;)

If you've had roofing done, and not checked it yet, I recommend inspecting your chimney. I narrowly avoided seeing if my insurance was as good as my stove...

Sorry, didn't think about pics.

Good to hear that you found this now. Thanks for the reminder.

The roofs I've done, we don't remove the chimneys. We also don't remove the plumbing vents. You just work around the jack or replace it but there is no reason to extract any of the pipes.

I bet some yahoo wasn't looking and ran into it or perhaps the pipe was never seated right and the roofers are innocent.

Now that I think about it, maybe they intended to remove the chimney cap so that they could slide the damaged roof jack over the top of the chimney. Sometimes those chimney caps can seize on the pipe really good and when they twisted the cap, the whole assembly came loose. A more knowledgable guy would have held the pipe while twisting the cap but a roofer needs to get the job done. Did you get a new roof jack for the chimney? Those things cost like 60$.

Good looking out (GLO), thanks for sharing

That is why I clean my chimney in the fall, It's a great time to check everything over right before you start burning.

The roofer worked with the existing ceiling to roof adapter. It's a solid metal box that extends from my ceiling to the roof. They had removed the triple wall to avoid damaging it. Talked to the roofer today, and he said he would look into who on his crew had reinstalled it.

@ Jack Straw. I've already changed my cleaning practices, and will clean before the 1st burn from now on.

Thank you for sharing. And all this time I was feeling guilty for being lazy and NOT cleaning the chimney until almost time for the first fire.:)
