Back in September I picked up a ton of Vermont Super Premium softwood pellets. (I have not burned them yet) Yesterday, I picked up a second ton of what I thought was the same thing. The BT website lists it as the super premium ton I previously purchased, but has a different picture. The super premium bag says super premium, safe for horse bedding, .2-.3 ash. The new bag says not safe for human or animal consumption, premium wood, less than 1% ash, etc.

I thought I was getting the same thing. Am I correct in saying that its not the same thing? any thoughts? should I do something about it if they are not what they listed?

That is very strange. I burned a ton of Vermonts last year and they were great. All of them came in the bag that says .2-.3 ash. I didn't know they made anything different. Start by calling the dealer and if he doesn't give you a solid answer try calling Vermont pellet co.

To me it looks like they are making two different pellets. One being the high quality softwood that they are known for and the other being a lower quality blend. I'd go straight to the source and talk to VWPC.

What you might be seeing is that PFI doesn't have a super premium standard anymore. The latest standards dropped the super premium an is just using premium these days.

I am looking to add 1 ton of "good stuff" to the stash for the colder weather. I was torn between Vermonts and Spruce points. With this info, I feel like I should be leaning towards Spruce points - especially since they are $20 cheaper. Anyone have an opinion?

Buc White, have you inquired with the dealer? I'm interested because Vermont is still my favorite pellet.

Sent VWPC an email. No need to worry. Just an issue with their bag supplier.

I had a similar question from a customer this last Tuesday. I hope you don't mind but I am going to recycle what I wrote to him:
Sorry about the mix-up, the pellets you have are super premium, the proof will be in the burn. Having made what we feel is the best pellet on the market we are not about to produce anything less. The bags however are a different matter.
The folks who produce our bags pulled old printing plates off the shelf for a recent order. Unfortunately we discovered the problem too late and rather then stop production, had to use them until the bag folks printed and shipped new bags.
Sadly, we encountered another bag issue and have just switched to a new bag supplier. The new bags are easy to spot, they have a matte finish rather then the old glossy one.
