Renaissance Rumford 100 vs. Valcourt Antoinette FP7

Both units are great fireplaces with excellent reputation. Both meet the new EPA for decorative fireplace called "ASTM low-mass". What this means is they meet a new standard for cleaner burning decorative fireplace. While not as stringent as the requirement for wood stove, they burn much cleaner than other decorative fireplace. However, there are no efficiencies requirements and you will find no efficiencies rating for either of these fireplaces. In view of the fact they are large fireplaces, you will get a fair amount of radiant heat from them, however dont expect them to be as efficient as EPA wood stove rated fireplaces.

Other than that your choice will depend on your budget and the look you are after. The Renaissance is a 'Rumsford' which means it is tall, narrow and shallow. Some people really like that look and if that is what matters by all means go for it! It's a great unit and will do you well. Keep in mind the herringbone panels are made of Vermiculite Skamol grade 7 (hardness degree) and may have to be replaced after a few years of use. Check the warranty and cost of replacement.

The Valcourt FP-7 Antoinette is a 'real' fireplace not a wood stove and is our most popular unit. Not sure what you mean by 'metal in the surround' since both units metallic exterior is hidden behind your construction. You can download the specs from either MFG web site to compare.

The Valcourt has a larger firebox (5.3 cu ft), is wider and deeper but not as tall as the Renaissance. Therefore, you can put more wood into it. It comes standard with molded refractory panels. One differentiating factor is the glass warranty on Valcourt is lifetime even if you break the glass by mistake.

Finally the Renaissance vents on 10" ICS Chimney only while the Valcourt is on 8" most brands of chimney. This may impact the overall cost as well.
