I think people in this region are on high alert following the June derecho that crippled the electric grid. Power was out here for 12-20 days. Power companies from the Dakotas, Canada, and Florida were here working. this storm could be a big deal because they essentially "patched" the grid back together as fast as they could and didnt take care of all the trees that could have fallen, but for some reason didnt. There are still a whole lot of trees hanging precariously from above power lines from that storm in June. Add some heavy wet snow (in WV anyway) and some wind and we have the makings for another grid failure. Be prepared!!

Well i woke up to find i am under winter storm watch.

Best of luck to anyone and everyone in this one's path. Prepare as much as you can, and have an emergency plan in place, ready to act upon. Try to keep a level head, don't take unnecessary risks, and help friends, family, and neighbors as you can!

I have beer, wood, and the pizza will be here in 15 minutes.

My plan is to just stay in the house and try to ride this out and hope for the best.

Just received a call and work has cancelled for tomorrow! Tomorrow was going to be the 1st day back after being out since Oct. 11th .. I should get paid for it so that's a good thing :)

I was hoping to get a call from my shop tonight telling me to stay home tomorrow, no call so I'll be off to work in the morning........

Hopefully we won't lose power for 9 days like we did this time last year. I have an electric well pump and no running water for 9 days was no fun.

Luckily I have a generator this year so at least we can get water if we do lose power.

Towns in CT along Long Island sound are under mandatory evacuations right now!

I too was hoping to be told to stay home but no call yet. The wife already has Monday and Tuesday off from work.

They have already canceled school in our town, Worcester and surrounding towns have canceled as well.

My company rarely cancels work so it came as a surprise however they want people off the expressway in Boston and this place is right off the expressway just before tunnels in Southie aka South Boston.. Hard to believe some have to work in worse locations unless they are emergency or essential workers.. Everyone please be careful!

Closed in Mass. tomorrow at least but it looks like you'll have your hands full down there! Good luck! Here it looks like some heavy winds and rain.

Okay. The pizza has been ingested. Stoves are loaded. Beer has been consumed. I will now sleep until Wednesday and pass on all of this hullabaloo.

Had to make a run back to lowes today, i asked a cashier about the generators i saw flying out of the store yesterday. She said that the shipment of 80 generators came in at 5am yesterday morning, and by 6:30pm last night all 80 were sold!! At 799.00 a piece! Nice chunk of change... They were pretty nice ones too, 6500 watt max briggs and straton "storm responder" models...

That is the model I picked up today at sears hardware. Its actually a 5500/8250 startup. lowes also called me from their waiting list and home depot's list was 9 pages long. I'm not usually too worrisome of things, but I know we are a target of sandy and didn't hesitate.

I wonder how many will be returned after the storm....nice time to pick one up if you need a new one.

I wondered the same thing. I'll be keeping mine though. Its nice to have just in case.

Good on ya...think its a bit unfair to take them back and never meant to insinuate that you would... I was just putting it out there to those who might need a new one or a backup for the one they already have. I have four generators ranging from 10K down to 1k...its nice to have options depending on the need.

No, I knew what you were saying. I looked on craigslist, but that was just insane.

No genset here, but *knock on wood,* my power will hold. It is usually pretty solid and I hardly lost power during the snowmagheddon (~24 hours) and not at all during the derecho. We shall see. I live close to a substation, so that helps I think.

The storm should make for some good wood scrounging :)

ahh yes 'scrouge' the silver lining in every major storm cloud

I'm in western NC and we're getting some pretty good wind. The power went out for a minute. I have a bunch of school work to submit online, so I'm hoping we'll keep power. It's nice and warm with the stove though!
