Can the the stove run from a regular generator or do you need one of the inverter generators, I don't understand the difference between regular power from the utility company and the power from a portable gen. or larger whole house standby generator.

I am going to be looking to get some sort of generator thinking whole house but the 5K cost may prohibit that right now.

My issue is with out electricity from somewhere I can not get out of my garage, the door is a 12 foot commercial door and there seems to be no way to open it without the motor.

battery backup / inverter would suit your needs im thinking. cost a lot less then the 5k whole house idea.

If you can find a whole house system for 5k, let me know where. i got quoted $9k for their most basic lowest wattage system (8500) + installation.

invertor = pure sine (think analog curve)
regular = modified sine (think digital curve)

Line power is pure sine. It is CLEAN power. a portable generator is 'dirty' power and sensitive electronics may not like it, may wear out faster, or may not work at all, with the dirty power. Your model may vary. Check your stove's manual for what it says. If it has nothing, call the company and find out. I used a modified on my stove for under a minuet before i unplugged it. It whined like a 3 dollar !@#!$ and it just sounded like i was breaking it.

A couple bucks extra now or a lot of bucks fixing stuff you damaged later. your call.

just rember that the utility company likes you to be without on occasion. thier trusty old wire wound generators on a hydroelectric plant are not good to some.

If you can afford the whole house I would go that way, and if you need 12 then you want 15 + period. smarter to think larger picture than just whats on current topic.

Look at the Generac 8000 watt(12000 peak) XP model. It has Tru Power Technology and runs my Harman Advance pellet stove my plasma tv computer well pump boiler refrigerator freezer and a whole bunch of lights just fine.Ran through the frankinstorm 8 hours and last years ice storm and several more outages before that. I think the price tag was $1200 so It was a lot less than a whole house one

This is the whole house gen I was looking at it looks like it has gone up in price since yesterday at a lot of sites.

The only thing that makes me think before jumping in on something like this is that I am 47 and do not think I have been without power for more than 24 hours since I was a kid, only been twice where I currently live and a few hours each time.

That's a real good price for that. It is not pure sine though. From the sounds of it, it seems to be pretty stable, but it still flucates. I'd guess it's probably in the middle of the 2 left/right options.

My mother got a 14kw Generac whole house LP system installed last year for $5370, including the auto transfer switch.

Regular generators produce a pure sine wave....however the voltage and hertz on these may vary enough to cause issues....when dc is turned into ac via an inverter it can come out as pure ,modified or step waved.....some motors and new computer plugs may only tolerate pure sine wave.

This is my understanding.

I take is that pellet stoves are very fussy on power?

During power outages, I run my house on a 1980s 4000 watt Generac. The only thing that doesn't like it are my UPS units on teh computer and satelite dish. I just plug those items to the wall if I need to use them. Everything else works just fine.
