We lost power for 4 days with Sandy and don't want to be without heat again. We only want to safely use our Harman Accentra Pellet Stove, refrigerator and TV maybe a couple of lights. We are concerned with the circuit board on the pellet stove as well as the TV possibly getting damaged from using a generator. Can anyone recommend a generator that would suit our needs? I have read a few posts on generators and they just seem to confuse me. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

100% a Honda or Yamaha 2000 (inverter). They are whisper quiet, sip gas and safe for electronics. Both are similar and dependable. Spend a little extra they are about $1,100. But you know what they say.. The right tool for the right job!

Ps.. I glad your power is back on!

Couldnt have said it better. If you look around you can get them a little cheaper then stated earlier but im sure supplies are very low right now so you might pay top dollar.

+2 -- I purchased a Honda 2000i floor model for 899 a couple of years ago. I added a transfer switch to simplify the connection to the house. It powers my downstairs Harmon P38, upstairs fireplace fan, refrigerator, and Great room & study outlets (this provides me with internet access).

My EU2000i just powered the fridge, tv, ps3, charged cell phones, brewed coffee and powered the Lopi Leyden pellet stove for 3 days after we lost power from Sandy. One day it ran for 12 hours on one gal of gas just powering fridge & tv. Super quiet.

Comparable as far as power output and thats where it stops. Over 20 lbs heavier, 5.5 hours run time on 1.8 gallons, not near as quiet, and i see no mention of linking together for additional power. In your link the 2 reviews show that one guy is happy that it started on only the 4th pull and the other review says that the pull rope is starting to fray after only owning it for a few weeks. It dont seem as bad as some of the others out there but to save 250 bucks why would you take your chances with an emergency generator.

I agree with the comments you had about the Honda....a better genny, I'm sure, but if you can buy one for $850, let me know where.......cheapest I've seen them is $1100. That's saving $500, if my math is correct.

RVWorld.com frequently has them for 850-899 shipped.

Just went through Sandy. Lost power for 3 days. In May I bought a Duromax XP8500E 8500w surge 7000 run. Ran 2 big refrigerators tv's, computers, boiler, pellet stove, well pump any lights we wanted on. Basically the whole house. Ran for 3 days + without a hitch. I paid $675.00 now they want $1099. I'm sure because of the demand. No complaints.

My apologies the web site is Campingworld.com. They have them for 999.00 right now and there is a 10% coupon for online orders.

Check out Maxtool.com - If you can wait a couple of months the prices mightl come down. If you can wait until spring they definatly will.

Thank you all. I found a store locally that is getting a shipment of Honda generators on Wednesday. I am hoping I can get one. Do I need a special extension cord to use the generator?

Bought eu2000i on oct 9th and paid $894 shipped to house. Price jumped $100 when sandy hit.

The Honda eu2000i is a great generator. However look into the Champion 73536i it's pretty much the same thing for half the price. I would say you are getting 95% of the honda generators features for roughly half the price. I picked up one for my self last year and after i was happy with it's performance picked up another one for my mom's house. They can be found for about 599 online.

I should mention real world performance is 8-9 hours on 1 gallon of gas at 50% load. It is rated at 1600 or 1700 (slight model difference) continuous and 2000 peak watts. I have tortured it running a 1500 watt space heater on high and a 300 watt halogen work light, took the load with out a problem.

I just got a recall notice for my EU2000i for a mispositioned clamp that can chew a adjacent line.

Just run properly rated extension cords from the gen into the house. Keep the gen 10-20 feet away from the house to avoid CO1 coming in. You might want to run the cords in through a window with something stuffed in to prevent air leaks.

If the gen or cords are exposed to the weather, consider cords with GFI included. HD and Lowes both sell them.

Whatever you do, do NOT plug the gen into a wall outlet with a double male cord, or in any way tie it into the house circuit without a proper transfer switch. You will send power out of your house to the main line and could put a hurt on some lineman trying to fix things. I have heard of people doing this, and it is dumb, dumb, dumb, not to mention illegal and dangerous.

For the 220/240 volt recp. on the gen. (if it has one) Not for 110/120 volt I would say yes as most have the 4 prong locking style which just isolates the ground ---->Just remember you would not sit in your garage w/the car running is the same reason you DO NOT RUN A GEN. !!!in there either. do not be a statistic!!!

Move it over repositioning the wire harness clamp or zip tie away from said recall problem + wrap in quality electrical tape as it would cost more $$ and time to drop off for repairs and pick it back up. Unless it is under warranty! IMO ,just my 2 cents.

I have a homelite 7125 startup 5700 continuous to run my house it has a 10 hp Yamaha motor,it's run through a 6 breaker manual transfer switch and has never let me down, not the quietest genny in the world but that's fine me,when shi* hits the fan and power goes out,the pellet stove is the least of my worries I'm running my furnace for heat. The Honda genny are nice but for the money there not worth it to me.I paid $699 for a generator that's has 5125 more startup and 3700 more running watts than the 2000 watt hondas

I like the multiquip line, but keep an eye on craigslist. Lots of people panicked ran out and bought a generator and never lost power so they think why keep it? until the next storm! there were at least a dozen listed here last week after the storm

wow I am so glad i paid a whole 199.00 for my last champian 4000/3500 generator. they start easy, easy on gas, and way easier on pocketbook than a honda. they are noiser, but that was an easy fix with a better muffler for 49 bucks. shucks has had them on sale every spring.

Maybe I should not talk about my e2500 Honda that I got in 1982. Built two houses with it and I tap off the riding mower for gas. Still starts on first or second pull.
