I used to own an Afton Bay pellet stove that I cleaned once a week, but we moved and I had to give her up. I purchased a rarely used Lopi Leyden on craigslist and am now trying to get the feel for it. I ran it on low for about 24 hours and it looks like the pellets backed up so I will hav e to clean it. I think it backed up because I closed the air intake all the way. The reason I did this was because when I had it open, the flame was going out about 2 minutes after I started it. The pellets were all junping around in the pot. If I open the air intake a little I assume the pellets won't gather up and I won't have to clean it daily? Any thoughts on this. Again I'm used to the ST. Croix with the versagrate system and bottom scraper where all I had to do was move it in and out once a day and the pellet stove could be on for 2 weeks straight. Any suggestions would be appreciated. The Lopi is a better looking stove but the St. Croix seems to be less maintainence.

Burning Pennington, energex Canadian, Maine wood pellets, green team, And Maine choice I would have to sweep the ash to the ash bin twice a day. When I swept the ash I would also stir the burn pot. The ash bin would usually go no more than 3 days before I had to empty it. I would have to do a complete cleaning (fire brick and ash trap) once a week.

I have since switched to PWI pellets and now only have to sweep the ash every 3 days. I empty the ash pan once a week and do a cleaning every 2 weeks.

I usually only pull the air damper lever out about a quarter inch depending on the pellets. I never have it closed and never seem to need it open more than 1/2".

Well, as you said, it's a used stove, so the very first thing is a FULL and in-depth cleaning of all ash traps, exhaust, etc, etc.
As for the pellets jumping around in the pot, that is normal, but you may have to adjust the air intake after the cleaning.

After the fire is up and burning "normally (after initial start), adjust rod in small increments until the burning pellets at the bottom of the pot are just starting to "wiggle" a little.....that should be a good running position. As the stove starts to get dirty, you may have to slowly open the air control, about 1/2' at a time.

As for normal cleaning, I'd say weekly.

The pellets jumping around in the Lopi burn pot is normal for the Travis stoves. Just takes some time and patience is getting the air set properly. Is it hooked up to a oak?
