Yes, the stone is a big hurdle. Heating it up takes time and avoiding it getting cold is also an issue.

The Heritage was just too small for my needs. I think if I would have had a Mansfield of Woodstock PH I would still have a soapstone stove. But I do enjoy the Defiant coming up to temp in 10-15 minutes. I could never get the temps that quickly on the Heritage.

To add to this, I reloaded the defiant this morning after nine hours on a high burn and the morning temp was at 400 degrees. So, it could have probably given me a 11-13 hour burn if I would have reloaded at the normal 200-300 degree temp.
Show off! :)

Be certain to dance away from the heating appliances!

Well done, BBar, for solving the old house heating puzzle and especially for doing so in such a skilled, frugal fashion. Now, what's this wood rack you speak of? Mind sharing???

Glad to hear they are keeping you warm.

The rack is one of these:

It's about 4' wide by 4' high, holds three to four wheelbarrows full of wood, costs about $40-$50, and is design neutral (it doesn't stick out good or bad). Right now it is lasting me about 5-7 days when full.

Some do not like having that much wood in the house. But for me, it means less trips back a forth, which means less dirt being tracked in and less wood dirt falling about since it is all stacked at once.

Cheating huh. If your not cheating, your not trying. Or so i have been told...

Glad to hear your doing well. Course some say we are in for a nasty winter I'm sure your dance will continue when or if you fire up the encore. Nice to have it as a back up.

Sounds great BB, hope this makes life easier for you.
