I did the first break in fire with a new Jotul Rangeley TL50 last week. Got the stove up to 200-250 and let it cruise out as per the manual. Several days later when I wanted to do the second break in fire, I had a lot of trouble opening the front door. The gasket was almost bonded to the front of the stove. I was afraid the gasket was actually going to pull off the door. It left a film on the front of the stove too.

Is this normal? Should I clean off the front of the stove where the gasket meets it? If so, with what?

Thanks in advance

Never experienced that one - giving this a bump as I'm curious about the responses too...

I've had that happen on our Castine when it was new. It didn't happen again so I forgot about it.

The door gasket on my brand new rangeley stuck a little too. Got through the break-in burns and subsequent cool downs, and now everything is fine. Probably just some extra glue from the assembly.

I think Diane nailed it.

Clean inside with a wire brush and it should be fine. But you say it is on the front of the stove. Try steel wool or emery cloth.

I read the manual for my Avalon Rainier from cover to cover during my break-in fire last month. It mentioned how the paint curing causes the whole thing to smoke a bit, not from the fire, but from the paint curing. It also mentioned the possibility that the front door gasket could stick to the paint during this break-in period. I didn't experience the door gasket issue, but it could be a paint curing thing?

I ended up calling the shop that installed it. They said it sometimes happened - a bit too much cement and not to worry about it. It never happened again.

Nice stove, by the way. Its doing a great job heating the place and hasn't even had to work that hard yet.

Im new to burning wood, first stove, 2nd break in fire in a new rangeley. My front door gasket stuck as well, but mine actually separated from the door. just wondering if i need to change it or try to cement it back in? Thanks

It happens sometimes. The paint gets tacky as it bakes in then solidifies as it cools. Just cement it back in that area.

I believe BK's princess manual states to open and close the door periodically during break in to avoid this issue.
