Here are the purposes for each of the ingredients:
  • wood char: for heat​
  • mineral char: also for heat​
  • mineral carbon: also for heat​
  • limestone: for the light-ash color​
  • starch: to bind the other ingredients​
  • borax: press release​
  • sodium nitrate: to speed the ignition​
  • sawdust: to speed the ignition​
any ever do wki for sodium nitrate

wood burners don't use charcoal do they?

As a blacksmith I am well aware of these facts. The binders and fillers cause bricket charcoal to be a very poor forge fuel.
I can't really think of any other uses for this knowledge, nonetheless, the ash can isn't the place for facts LOL.
 
I'm really not sure where to relocate it...I guess I'll scoot it over into the Wood Shed, as it's a fuelish subject.
 
I sometimes use 3-4 pieces of Match light to get things going. A 12 lb bag for $5.99 is a deal for a quick start...
