hello all.
well i got my Traeger GBU 070 corn/pellet furnace install completed over the fall. i can say i like it a lot.
so far so good.i have only burnt about 1/2 a ton so far and other than a couple things i need to have some time to dial in it should be a fast pay back over the Propane i have.

some numbers.

1. stove $1,200
2. duct work $560
3. pellet pro chimney $980
4. first ton of pellets $230 American wood fibers.

i spent the money and took the pipe straight up through the house out the top 18ft.
i only wanted to do it once and i know i would not have liked it coming out the side of the house. same with the duct work. i could have saved a few bucks and did the round duct that is sold at lowes and elsewhere but i wanted it done right the first time.
a couple things i could use some help with is
1. i cant stop it from smoking in pilot mod. when pellets are dropping for 2 min during the 16 min cycle they just smolder and i have tried the 8 min cycle and the 2 speeds on the draft fan. smokes heavy for 2 min or so. directions say that there should not be any smoke. maybe it because my furnace came with the corn pot. cant seem to find the pellet pot on line. anyone know were i can find some information?
2. emptying the ash every 3 days is kind of a pain. maybe the pellet pot would make it easier?
3. is the draft fan damper need adjusted? or is it meant for corn that burns hotter? doesnt seem to make a difference with pellets. would i use less if i cut it back some? right now its 100 % open. and burns fine.
4. chimney seems hotter than i would expect for a double wall. it gets very hot to the touch. you can just touch it for a Milli-sec or it would burn your skin anywhere within 10 ft of the stove.
5.has anyone added DHW coil to a pellet stove? i have solar DHW but i could use some help in the winter months and i have the storage.

anyway any help would be great.
here are some pics.

Very Nice! Don't see many furnace installs on the forum. And yours is a dandy. Duct work is very nice indeed!

How's it doing so far for you?

The install looks nice. I wonder if it's code though. I wanted a pellet furnace. I had a company come out and evaluate our house if we could do it. One thing he told me is the stove or furnace had to vent out within so many feet of the unit... I think it was less than 10 feet. It couldn't pass two walls. That's why we couldn't use a furnace because our room with the furnace is under ground, so the only way to vent was up and they told me it wasn't allowed. They wouldn't even let me put the pellet stove upstairs and vent it out the roof. I ended up not getting a pellet stove because the only place it would be code in my house is where our couch sits in our basement because it's next to a wall that they could vent within less than 10 feet.

And exactly what town has this for code?

its doing great. really puts out the heat. heats our 1,750 sqft ranch. but its not been that cold yet. had a week in the upper 20's. seems to use a little less than 2 bags in 24 hrs. thinking maybe a worst case 2 to 3 bags in the dead of winter. the longer it runs the more stable the temp. had to play with the duct work baffles and returns a litle. but so far i have been talking it up at work. much better then cord wood. just dont want to spend the time that cord wood takes. i have a small "pretty little thing " wood burner in the living room ill use for the shoulder months.

thanks for asking.

Didn't the installation manual tell you how to set the draft?

not really, the owners manual is very vague at best. called a dealer and was told that with as much chimney as i have and the extended time in the pilot mod (because of temps) that it probably will smoke. need to keep temps up in the chimney to keep as much natural draft as possible. we will see. i also think it could be because of the corn burn pot being choked up with the ash from the pellets. i have been trying to find a pellet pot but they seem like a lot of money. $350 or more. ill deal with it this winter and decide by next fall. ill keep my eyes open for a used one.
thanks for asking.

wow seems like someone got there wires crossed. Traeger says the "suggested" method is straight up,
with the 10 ft rule you wont be putting any "pellet" heat in.

were are you at?

Huh? Straight up is the best method possible? This allows for installations that couldn't be done with a standard up and out method. The Up and Out needs to be near a wall.

Straight up can be in the middle of the home, and provides a better natural draft and easier clean (in most cases).

I am curious as to who would say such a thing?

To Steeltown, beautiful unstall. The Venting situation is a little unorthodox, but should work well.

Not many Trager users here. Although the Pinnacle unit is a Sister to it (couple owners here). Some advice should come shortly.

You got a good deal on it. I almost called on that CL ad... :(

It is going to smoke at start up, but to limit it, put it on 8 min and draft on medium. For the draft gate, more air is better ~ it isn't a wood stove, so don't worry about thinking that all your heat is going up the flue. If you re-do your flue, let me know and I'll tell you what to use. You don't have a pellet stove, so shouldn't be using a pellet stove pipe.
