Definately not cherry, way too stringy and not reddish in color.
My money is on Locust.
It takes a little longer to dry since it is one of nature's only pre-preserved woods. The Native Americans in the NE made fence posts and anything structural outdoors with it.
It burns hot and long. Very similar to oak, stinks about the same too

Could be locust, but I'm going with hickory.
Locust tends to have a greenish tint. I'm color blind, so I really can't see if this does, but the grain and wood texture resemble hickory to me.
Either way, it's excellent firewood.

Burning Hunk
I always have trouble with wood identification. I'm surprised an avid wood burner never put together a web page with pictures and burn characteristics of the different varieties. You know, a picture of the bark and one split. I've tried searching the internet numerous times only to be inundated with information I didn't want.
Would there be any interest in something like this? I have some web page knowledge and can put it together with the assistance of members pictures and input. Hmmm...... :coolsmile:

I can do some web page editing too if you need. I suggest putting a table on the wiki that could be added to. Ping Craig to see if he has any thoughts on where he'd like to put it on the wiki..ie which category.

I agree oak or hickory or possibly locust, but locust has a thicker bark and like Eric said greenish or even yellowish color to the wood...that doesn't look like that.
It's definitely not cherry...too stringy. My money is on oak but lets see the better bark picture first.
Might be locust but it looks a lot like some black walnut I split a few years back. It was pretty stringy as I recall.

I'm going to cut down trees on a couple of acres at each of my properties until I find one that matches your picture. Then I'm going to call in an arborist to get an official determination and post it here.
