After I posted pics of my new insert, I decided it was time for a new mantle. It was pretty hard to get wood nailed to the stone straight and without cracking, but Im no carpenter. The built in bookcases have been in the house since it was built in 1951. The previous owner left a small can of the stain that was on it, probably 10 or 15 yrs ago. I got the same stain and re did the bookcases, as well as the new mantle.
The picture are oldest to newest the original heatilater with glass doors is in the first one. The insert with the bare mantle in the second, and then todays finished product in the third.
Next project, the not so level hearth and its 60 year old cracked stone. It never ends
