Its cooling down now so time to get the new Rockland insert broke-in. I do have the manual but other than 'building a few small fires first' is there any more specific recommendations? A certain amount of kindling the first time? A certain temperature (and measured where)? I do have a laser IR temp gun. This is my first new stove... Just want to make sure I do it right!

Thanks!
My Jotul Castine advised bringing fire to 300, 400 and 500, but use a stove top temp gauge to do so. Advised me to cool down stove completeley before subsequent fire so I used 3 consecutive days to accomplish. Are you able to use a temp gauge on the stove?

I have a Rutland heat thermometer . I placed it where the blower is , it didnt read anything . I don't know if I just didnt burn long enough or if its broke . I should prob get an ir thermometer . I burned for about an hour with Just small pieces of kindling .. I guess I will just do. Few more small burns and then start using reg oak firewood.

You probably did not get a hot enough burn for the thermometer to register the temp. I have one placed in the blower outlet slot above the stove where the heat blows out and its been working fine for 4 years now. You need to get a fire going hot enough to burn off the manufacturing oils and cook off the paint. Don't be afraid to get a decent burn going. You sound like you're being overly cautious about using your new stove.

Again, READ THE MANUAL as many times as needed to understand how and why the stove works, maintenance, cleaning, etc... You won't overfire the stove by burning 3 or 4 splits and letting it burn down to coals. Gradually increase the amount of splits you're burning and eventually you'll have the stove seasoned and ready to burn full time.

Thanks but that post was old, we're on our third year of burning with it. ;)
I admit I might have missed something in the manual specific, but I am usually pretty thorough and did read it and the burn in directions. I've even since burned in another stove... I didnt target anything specific just slightly bigger fires gradually over several days. Did that one outside though! No smell in the house.

Yes,I think I was being cautious .i will burn a few splits tonight and see how it goes..

Another question Im on my 4th or soo burn. No more paint smell haven't been able to get it over 300 . What's the best way ? I had it running with the air wide open for about 30 min then started to close the air alitte . The fire is roaring , my fan is on auto setting and it kicked on ..my question is what is the best method of getting it to 500 -600. Should the blower be on high ,medium or low ? And should the air intake be open all the way or halfway once the fire gets going ..I have no problem with starting the fire .thanks
