Hi folks, I'm a longtime lurker who made the leap this fall into the world of wood heating. My weapon of choice is a Harman PB105 pellet boiler. We kept our old heating unit, a cast iron Burnham oil boiler, as backup.

So far we're thrilled with the unit. We had a little problem with over-pressurization but solved it with a larger expansion tank. I had a pro do the installation, BTW.

Welcome aboard! From a little experience, you'll learn to really like that Harman boiler. It's very quiet, requires little maintenance, is very clean and pushes out lots of Btus. Mine seldom shuts down completely because I have it connected to a 100 gal buffer tank. So far, so good.

Thanks for the welcome, guys. My system is set up so it pumps heated water through the cast iron Burnham boiler, SmokeEater, so it has some buffering of sorts. I'm in Wisconsin, so I imagine it'll be burning pretty steadily once winter sets in!

I'll include a few pics to show what I have done with the pellet boiler. In behind the Harman is a Liberty 30 that I bought off Craigslist for $350 and was only 7 years old. I use the Liberty for a backup to the PB. Both boilers feed into a Smart 100 Triangle Tube indirect water heater and are in parallel to one another. Both boilers can operate either singly or together and only heat the tank. A stainless Grundfos pumps the hot water through a 50 plate HX and a Taco 0012 pumps out to the radiant floor and to the upstairs. The two boilers can supply about 235,000 Btus to the tank if run together. The Smart is also the DHW supply.
