In The Woods
Just finished cleaning the saws and sharpened (filed) the chain on the 390. I'm hoping to get the Maple along with this Cherry, if I have enough time I'll start on this third Cherry.

Sunday I'll spend splitting what I have bucked up. Pic 6341 I'll clean up after I get the Maple leaner pic 6342, pic 6339 is a topped off Cherry just north of the Maple, if I get this taken care of I'll go for pic 6347.

Your woods have so much empty space compared to mine, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a tree in m y woods (not that I have tried).;lol Much easier to get around in your woods.

From the looks of the old stumps they have taken some nice Hemlock or White Pine from this area when they had it logged off 20-30 years ago. The original owner was a great man, loved his woods which he took care of until his death.

How tall is the tree in the 3rd picture? Should be nice crisp weather to be working in. I may begin my woods this weekend now that I'm catching up on friends wood cleanup.

I'm not sure, the bottom of the tree looks like a skidder hit it, once I get it down I'll measure it.

I will make sure I bring the cable, old winch along with the other winching equipment, close quarters on two of the Cherry trees (one pic not taken) the Maple leaner is almost in the top of the Hemlock.

Quite a few trees like that here too zap. I've started taking those down. Most are maple.
Maple sounds good to me. When I started this (cutting wood) I had a chit load on the ground, it took 3-4 years but I finally have most of it taken care of so it's the leaners and the damaged stuff until mother nature puts more down.

Today went pretty good, the first tree was the Red Maple which was in the top of the Hemlock. I cut off a couple of sections then winched it out of the Hemlock.

The next tree was the damaged Cherry, hit the drop zone dead on so the winch was not needed. The third tree was the uprooted Cherry, just when I finished with that my wife showed up with lunch. I did need the winch on this to pull it out of the top of the birch.

Sunday will be spent splitting everything that was cut today.

good job Zap. I split one truck load of hickory and then cut the rest of the down hickory up..........got 20 big rounds to get to the splitter.

It should be a good day in the woods tomorrow, plan on splitting it all then hauling it out starting on Turkey Day.

The Hickory sounds nice, good work.

My nephew wants to deer hunt in my woods in the morning. As soon as he is out of there I am after more hickory for the weekend. The rounds I am going to cut can barely be lifted.
I'll get alot done.

You should have him stick around for a couple more hours....take care of some of that heavy lifting for you. ;)

Nice hard work today eh, zap. Beautiful day for it. Looks like good manageable rounds there. Does your wife ride a quad to get your lunch out to you? Any pics of lunch? Nice work today. Get the rest done BEFORE thanksgiving dinner! I'll be working more oak tomorrow down the road.... Free!

She walked back to the work area, a turkey sandwich,no pics. I usually take a coffee, apple, granola bar with two to three waters with me when I'm working in the woods. Perfect weather for working in the woods, sounds like the weather will change for the worst on the east coast the week after Thanksgiving so after tomorrow I'll be hauling the wood from up top down to the house first then work on this stuff.

With the Oak scrounge I grabbed, the Ironwood I cut along with the Cherry and Maple I cut the last two months we are seven years ahead.

How much Oak are you working on?

Wow, 7 years ahead.... nice job being that far ahead. Cutting down 2 stumps to finish the oak we have been working on over the past month. Friend and I both worked on this as it yielded around 7 cords. We are splitting this between us. Then swinging by his father in laws to pu felled hickory. Then, last, neighbor has more oak, going to buck tree 1 of 2 tomorrow. Neighbors need help, and dont need the wood, and call me. Word is spreading I guess. This is all thanks to hurricane sandy. As much as I want to work in my woods, that will have to wait I guess.

The week after thanksgiving, whats coming?

Sounds like you'll be busy for a while. All I read was this nice sunny weather the east has had will change, colder weather moving in with freezing rain and snow, we shall see.

From AccuWeather
The storm track, which moved west to east over central and southern Canada during week three of November and will continue through week four, will nose southward to the northern third of the United States beginning late in the month.
The result is likely to yield more significant waves of cold air and storms with more wintry precipitation in northern areas. At least a few episodes of clouds, showers and perhaps thunderstorms will affect some southern areas.
The waves of cold air following most of the storms will be significant enough to bring rounds of lake-effect snow.
There will be breaks in between the storms, of course, but don't expect one to two weeks of sunshine, except for say the Southwest.
On a more technical note, the overall pattern later in the month and beyond will remain favorable for some of these storms to gain strength upon reaching the Eastern states. This blocking pattern has shown its nature already this fall by way of Sandy and the nor'easter snowstorm that followed a week later.
The output of the storms moving eastward could yield not only drenching rain, but areas of heavy snow, ice and even severe weather.

I'm on vacation for the next 10 days......it's gonna be a balls-to-the-wall-work-on-that-damm-room marathon. BUT, she DID give me the OK to go out for deer on the opener next Monday, so I'm stoked about that! We got all the drywall hung in the living room except the two sheets on either side of the fireplace (have to install the cement board first). Got the chase cap installed and finished up the flue pipe. I should have smoke puffin out of that NZ3000 tomorrow afternoon.......she's ecstatic!

Hope you gone done safe today zap, for me 5 hours of bucking pin oak, 4 truck loads, done for the day, its football time. Eh, no pics this time either. Be well

Just splitting today, I started on the Red Maple then moved down the trail to the first Cherry, the last stop was the second Cherry. Starting next week on Thursday morning I start hauling all the wood out.

Pic 6388 are the rounds split up in pic 6393.

Nice pile of rounds/splits. I too love to split on site, the less handling the better. Will be nice doing what you love on thanksgiving morning. Who knows, maybe a turkey will hitch a ride in the quad back to the dinner table ;)

We have enough turkey around you could take 6 of them and it would not even show. Two years ago in the winter we had 40 turkey in the front and another 30 in the back.!!!

Thats probably because you have some of the most manageable woods for a turkey to walk through. They probably come from all over the place just to roost.
