Yesterday DH wanted to Reload as he has not done in a couple of weeks. He loaded it up and then got distracted. I walked in with the dog and smelled very hot metal. Checked stove - top was 400 ish but flue was halfway through the red.

I opened the door for a minute then closed it and put the cat in to cool the air in the flue. Kept the air open to keep the firebox from overheating.

DH checked outside to make sure no sparks from flue.

In 10 minutes all was back to normal operation.

It is weird to open things up to cool them. And the cat just felt right to do as the stove itself was not that hot and I needed to cool the flue. Hope it did not damage it. :-/.

So I see it all the time here but I am adding my psA not to get distracted while starting!

Nothing to do with your scare and I do know what you meant, but I have to say my sick sense of humor had you and the dog sticking the family feline into the stove to cool it down. MEOW! :) Ohh dear - I am sure there are better things to throw in to cool a hot fire, heh!

Mary, I do hope this is a lesson learned for him! Seems every year we have stories of folks opening the draft and then leaving the stove. Not good for sure but thankfully yours turned out okay.

I agree that it seems weird what you have to do sometimes to get it to cool down but engaging the cat was definitely the right thing to do. I probably would have turned the air down quite a bit in this situation but it appears all turned out well. Happy for that!

Thanks Dennis! I felt torn about the air - would it not have made the firebox much hotter if I'd shut down the air at that point? I puzzled over it and promised myself that if it was not heading in the right direction in 5-10 minutes I'd try it...

WHOA Mary! Tell hubby to "please step away from the Fireview,.....you are too close to the Fireview".!!!
He likes shiny pennies too, I'll bet.==c
It happens.....well, never to me, of course...;)
