Ooookay? What the hell is that Rick? Is that a hornets nest?

So random question... Why does the discharge from the Garn go right into a barrel?

Yes. Bald Faced Hornet's nest. It was on the end of the 6 inch smoke pipe.

I think I would have waited for a nice cold morning and fired it up. No death is too kind for bald faced hornets.

I've lifted the lid on more than one LP tank and got ZOTTED by an angry horde of those things. .....Problem is, then I have to go back and retrieve the tools I dropped...

The Garn allows the exhaust to be routed into a 55 gallon drum filled with water.

I take it you had no water in there during the summer of no operation?

Nothing cool about that nest. I assume you got away without major trauma?

Yes for sure, we always carry a case of Raid Wasp & Hornet killer in the summer. Just about guarantee that every old roof you open up has at least one nest.
Nasty, grumpy little insects for sure. Really dislike them.

Actually wasps and hornets are two different critters and there are several kinds of each. Paper wasps and bald face hornets and their nests are way different from each other. Found some good pics of each................................About the Garn barrel... I didn't know about putting water in the barrel. Guess it would freeze anyway. I was told to put a little sand in the bottom so I did...................... Found the nest a couple of weeks ago and just removed it today. Nobody home. It's been below freezing here off and on for a month. They are long gone.

Don't go adding water. I was wrong (never trust a WG owner). Looks like Garn says sand and a screen. I guess they just want the barrel to dissipate a bit of the heat and catch anything that might get out solid/hot.

The paper wasps will make the same looking nest if left alone long enough. sprayed quite few of them down. They were smaller nests, looked similar to your picks of the bald faced hornets nests. Had a new roof put on, went through about 8 or 10 cans of spray before t was done.

Definitely two different critters. My deer blind had a wasp nest in it this fall when I went to do a little pre season scouting/watching. The wasps had a nest in there about 6" in diameter and were coming and going for the 3 hours I sat there. They don't bother you if you don't bother them.
Hornets on the other hand will attack if they see you coming and lord help you if you happen to disturb their nest accidentally.

Those are the nasties right there. Them and yellow jackets. The little ones that build nests in the ground are the worst. You never know they are there until you put your foot on their front door. Adds excitement to picking wild blackberries in the fall.......

Hi, I,m from Belfast ME and I collect these nests. The one you have is a aerial yellow jacket nest and i would love to have it for my collection. If you still have can you send it to me? I can handle the shipping cost.

interesting hobby. seriously..

Those vicious little hornets that make their nest in the ground can be a real problem for humans but not skunks. The skunks will dig the whole nest out for lunch. Not sure which is worse to have in your yard the hornets or the skunks....

Hi Tice, Welcome to the Boiler Room. Get your mailing address to me and I'll ship it to you.

Sorry for the double post on the same subject. I thought it did not get through. Flying cow I have been collecting for nine years and my biggest one is a two-footer.

Tice do you spray them with shellac or varnish of some kind to keep the nests from falling apart?

If you have large dogs, then hornets. Don't ask me how I know :)
