A posting to this Forum from 2001 says that Vermont Castings and Jotul produce wood stove inserts where you can keep the door open during the burning. A scan of their websites does not show any such model (anymore). I am aware that Hearth Stone has the excellent "Morgan" insert with screen, but it is an inch too high. Are there still any other companies producing inserts where the door can be kept open?
If no insert exists, then I just want to improve the efficiency of my existing fireplace as much as I can. From my research, that would mean to install an airtight heat-exchange fireplace insert such as the "Wilkening Ultra Great Original" and maybe an additional cast iron fireback. I actually question whether or not it is worth it to pay extra to get an airtight heat circulation system, as airtight is essentially only needed during non-operation; and the cheap but practical solution appears to be to use an inflatable bag at the chimney opening after the fire goes cold.
