Smokey , are you sure it is the 2N1 ? A picture of the inside would verify which model.
That's a really good point.

Well that advise pretty much covers it. I will try to be nice, and if that doesn't work, it's time to go postal! It's to late for the highlights though. Funny twist to this otherwise gloomy situation. I called a guy I know that rebuilds VC stoves to see what the labor cost would be to replace the stove back. He tells me he bought out the leftover inventory of the stove store where I got my stove, and he thinks he has my heat shield with the correct serial number on it! I'll know more tomorrow. What are the odds... I will try again to contact Monessan. I died on hold 4 times today, left massage but did not get a call back. First 2 VC dealers I called said they could not help me, so I'll try a few more tomorrow. Metalsped, I agree the void is from the casting process. We design cast magnesium and aluminum armatures at my office, and we see these types of voids all to often. The more complex the shape, the harder it is to cast and still allow the gasses to escape. I thought the stove may have fallen over at the dealer, destroyed the heat shield and cracked the stove back, but it sounds like the heat shield is good as new, so I don't know what might have happened to crack it. Hopefully VC will step up before I crack.
Sticks - The tag I received said Defiant model 1610 non cat, and the stove I (think) I bought is a model 1975, cat stove.

Here's a photo of the inside of the stove. Note the cat cover balanced at the ends to keep it in place. I wedged in some copper shims to help keep the cover from falling out, but they didn't like the heat. I'll make them from steel next time.

Where are you located?

yep 2N1 .. couldnt even guess why they would have changed the heat sheild. Maybe moved the stoves out of box at the same time and took the sheilds off to lean it back on an escalera? Okay so I can guess

I'm in Guilford, CT 06437

Mystery solved. I was lucky enough to connect with a guy who bought out the remaining stove parts at the VC dealer in my town. There was an brand new heat shield with the correct model, and a serial number on it. I will pick it up on Saturday. Now all I have to do is get the stove re-built.
