Elm

Def not oak...I remember leaves were not oak leaves. Elm will work....my 1st walnut and elm score today. I'll take it!

elm.jpg Just looked up elm leaves and I think this is an elm tree.....Thanks for the info!

elm

Try to split it by hand and if your ax or maul bounces off of it like you're a cartoon character, then it's ellum.

Looks just like the elm I stacked today.

It split like red oak today...one test piece into 6 splits.........very dense and very wet....not oak though......leaf shape and pattern was similar to elm. Maybe I got lucky. When my FIL was talking about taking tree down few months back i looked at it and though ash....shows you how much I know!

I got 3 truck loads of downed trees from the storm. Rounds already at the curbside, thought it was oak until I split it. Look similar to what you have but sadly its gum that I had to deal with. Oh well, at least I have future shoulder season covered.

I vote elm
Good fire wood. Better if it splits OK. Not always an easy wood to split ;)

Does not look like oak to me.

That is not oak, aside from the way it looks just like elm there are no medullary rays. With those high resolution pics we'd see medullary rays in the end of the rounds. I think it is American Elm. I have split some Elm that was not particularly difficult to split, so don't judge solely by the difficulty of splitting.

Get it all split ASAP before it changes its mind about letting you split it!

nice pick boom stick.......gonna keep you warm once it gets dried out and seasoned. its gonna start getting chilly up there. i know the past couple of weeks it was into the low 20's by morning and a little chilly sitting in a tree stand. i was up about 20 miles east of Albany near the Mass border during the first week of deer season. enjoy.....and stay back when you FIL starts pulling on those trees ;)

I split a whole bunch of these elm rounds today.....split really nice........I did get into an ugly piece and I was rejected promptly. put it aside for the splitter. wood is at 30.something percent moisture and heavy.....inner heart wood is like a green brown and I could have sworn it stained my hands yesterday. I am gonna make sure this all gets split in the next day or so. My FIL has a downed elm on his land! I am gonna take it, has been there for a while.
