regency i2400 draft issue help?

i have a regency i2400 which i inhereted with the house. inserts generally have sucky efficiency but it heats my house well enough. i also inhereted a big free standing regency that is in my basement/shop. i notice that when i close the draft on the free standing stove, the flame really diminishes and i get great sweeping blue secondaries. but when i do the same on the insert, it only marginally diminishes the flame. my overnight burn times SUCK cuz it won't shut down adequately. i'm warm as hell but burning waaay too much wood.

my question:

is there a way to get to the draft rod/paddle to see if its warped or adjustable?

monitor kerosene heater
a few stihls (362, 290, 180)

The first thing I would check is to make sure the door gasket and the window gasket are making
good seals and not leaking by. Your door handle may need adjustment to make up for
the door gasket compressing.

you know what? my gaskets are pretty new but i'm gonna re-do them anyway.

thanks for the heads up.

anyon else run into this problem with a a regency insert?

The Regency 2400i is the same inside as the Hampton HI300. Most folks report good burntimes with this insert.

Examine the air control assembly to make sure it is operating correctly. Look for sloppiness in the air valve. Also, make sure that the two baffle bricks are in good condition and seated in place correctly, all the way to the back of the stove. Check the door gasket with the dollar bill test before replacing. The door latch tightness is adjustable by removing washers.
 
After the first year with our Regency i2400, I found that the door wasn't sealing too well and we were burning through a load rather quickly. Removed one washer from the door latch and it made all the difference in the world.

I also find that the 2 nuts that hold that door latch tend to loosen from opening and closing the door over time and keep a wrench handy to snug them up occasionally.
 
the gasket is new and the door seals tightly.

begreen...how do i get to the air control assembly?
