Take a look at what the saw is throwing too, a sharp chain should throw decent size chips, if you start to get some fine chips or dust then it definitely needs sharpened. Cutting should take longer at this point.

Wow. If you wait until there's dust instead of chips,it'll take longer to bring the chain up to snuff.Plus its been running hot from over revving & not getting as much done.That's more wear & tear on the saw's components.

If you get into the habit of light filing after one or possibly two tanks of gas, it takes less time to file and you will gain that time back while cutting. It is hard to beat a good sharp chain.

Yea, what these guys are telling you. Number 1 best & cheapest "modification" you can make to any chainsaw that will pay the highest dividends is a sharp chain. Better for the saw & operator. Pay close attention to how the saw cuts, feels, & sounds with a sharp chain. The minute that changes sharpen or swap chains. A C

Hate to sound like I'm piling on . But a sharp chain is the most important thing in using a chainsaw ,and expecting it to perform reasonably . When I'm done for the day, all the saws get a going over ,That includes sharpening the chains .
But , hey, ! A bigger saw is a great idea as well ! pick up an ms 362 ,and never look back .

Carrying that around the woods all day will kill you. Those buggers are heavy so fit only for a young man.

Everyone always talks about the weight of a saw. Carry as much as you can handle. A 460 will out work 2-3 people on a splitter. I have even ran 2 splitter crews 2 on each one. The 460 will run with them. So, every hour on a really good saw is 3-4 man hours of grunt work. You figure out what else needs done. (Not including stacking)

Me either.....But I have some you guns helping. I am even down to letting someone else run the saw when bucking. I am not afraid to run the splitter on a milk create any chance I get! (I really use a cat litter pale its short like the milk create with out the holes)
Two tips I got from you thats worth alot.

1. Set when splitting.
2. Timber jack is crap. (A little better than nothing but not once you add the weight)

For sure it can be handy having some young lads around. Speaking of sitting, nowadays that is how I get most of my exercise; that is, walking around looking for a good place to sit.
