Well after all the cleanup of the tubes and all we got a fire started and after a bit shut down the primary intake and low and behold we had some secondary burn in the back two tubes. And yes our glass had been getting pretty dirty. Still not seeing bit in the front. Do we need to shut down the primary always in order to get the secondary burn?

At what temperature is "after a bit"? What is the tempurature of the top center stone, measured at about it's center? If the stove is to cool, even with great wood, not only will you not get good secondaries, you will get blackened glass..

We usuallyburn it around 400 degrees but of course after 6 hours it does down. What should it be on the center of the stove before we shut the primary down? Also when we cleaned things out we wanted to remove the four tubes out in order to vac it well and could not. Is there a trick to that? So appreciate all the comments!

6 hours of flames is pretty good as alot of your heat comes from the coal stage of the burn. Like 50 %.

So sounds like your not doing too bad.

6 hours of flames and 2 or more hours of good coals and coals left to be able to start another load is pretty good performance.

Soapstone is slower to warm so I like to go by the flue temps when adjusting the air control. I have double wall pipe so I use a probe type thermometer if your using single wall a magnetic type will work but the temps will be roughly half. On reloads I normally start closing the air at 400-450 on a N-S load, by thirds and have it closed down at around 650-700. Normally my stovetop thermo won't be to 300 before I'm done but it's slow too and I should get a new one.

I don't think it would be very different from the heritage. Just keep an eye on the chimney, if there's no smoke your doing fine.
