I noticed something different between last years bag and this years. They are now labeled ultra premium with ash below .5%. Anyone else seeing these, I'm paying $239 a ton.

Ha fooled me I googled some and found that they have had these for a while, just the first time I have seen them.
Hamer's Ultras were the first pellets I burnt. Fantastic pellet! Best heat in my experience, even better than Somersets, and virtually no ash. I had to adjust my stove's ashdump times because so little ash was produced.

These are not a new pellet this year. Here is the deal.
Hamer, up until this spring had two seperate plants that made wood pellets. One plant in Elkins, WV and one plant in Mount Hope, WV. At the Elkins plant, they make a pellet that is superior to the pellet that was produced at the Mount Hope plant. Pellets from Elkins have beens labeled Ultra-Premium for many, many years. The pellets from the Mount Hope plant were labeled "premium" and the bag was identical except for the word "ultra."
What changed this year is that the plant in Mount Hope closed up, and the only remaining plant is the Elkins, WV plant. Therefore, the only Hamer pellets that you will ever see again are the "ultra-premiums."

Any idea why they closed ? Would assume that this also cuts production, and is partly responsible for the Huge price increease ( now 300, if you can find them) and lack of availability.
Pretty good price for a very good pellet....I'd load-up on them if i lived near there.

I have both Somersets and Hamers "ultra" premium and in my opinion the Hamers are superior. I have found that they burn much hotter in my stove and the ash is super low. Been using the Somersets for above 30 degrees, switch to Hamers when it gets below 30(like tonight). I love these things. So far best pellet I've burned. First season, but so far have tried 5 different ones and Hamers is top of the list.

So far with the hamers the ash is about 1/4 less then I'm use to and is more fluffy, the color is more light grey, i also had 2 clinkers ive never had before. The glass color is not as dark. As far as more heat output it is not much better than cheat river. I got enough to burn for another week before I switch back to cheat. Hamers burns a heck of lot cleaner with not much more heat in my stove, but I'm still not sure if it's worth the extra $$.

I'm just finishing up burning my first ton of Hamer's. This is my first year burning pellets so the only thing that I have to compare them to are Energex Canadian. I think they have a little more heat, and definatley less ash. However the ash that they do produce gets caked up in the burn pot of my Accentra. I have to scrape the burn pot twice a day or the caked up layer of ash will cover all the air holes in the burn pot. When this happens the incoming pellets are unable to burn properly, and eventually will spill over the edge of the burn pot even with a reduced feed rate. Once I scrape out the caked up layer they burn great, however I will probably not buy them again because of this. I guess it goes to show you that different stoves like different pellets, whether they are ultra-premium or not.

They can go to super duper ultra premium but when they are stored outside they will go to chit.

I had been using Hamers until this year. I switched because I was experiencing auger jams, clinkers and excess dust in the bottom of the bag. At $259 a ton plus delivery I thought I should, at least, get a reliable pellet. I switched to New England pellets. I have had NO problems but they produce more ash and burn a little cooler. I'd be willing to try the Hamers Ultra Premium if, IMO, they've resolved their problems. I'll keep my eyes open for more posts.
