So I spent my day off yesterday, you guessed it! Can't wait to burn this Locust, I cut into 18 to 20" lenghts, and purposely split into large splits. I normally split waaaaaaay to small. I definitely get carried away with the log splitter normally. Wow, that stuff is HARD and heavy!

So the question is, will this be ready next year (winter 2013/14), or 2 years?

Nice score, Locust dries pretty quick. Should be good to go by next year, 2 would be even better. But I'm no expert.

Hey, whereabouts on the island? I'm in Northport.

Nice score of high BTU wood ;)
Probably good for next winter (13/14) one year from now.
but definitely 14/15, 2 years

Split immediately, cross stacked off the ground, in the sun, good for next year.

Already split! Was splitting in the rain, with 50 mph winds last night. Wife thinks I'm nuts, I think she is right! :)

Nice score. Will be fine next year. Don't even need to cover it although I do. I would have stopped and taken that tree as well. I just got one like it recently......Damn I love a good wood scrounge

Nice !! I'm working on a bunch of locust as well.

There's so much of it just laying around !

Agree with Gzecc. Should be good to go if treated as he suggested . If you can spare it for yet another year , it should be even better.

how did you drive past it the first time...bet you swerved...

Did you take the other two trees too?

You mean the other 4? Ssssshhhhhsh". Not yet! I've got a lot of wood to buck, split and stack before I drag anymore home. I'm out of space. But that locust was just staring at me!

Id concentrate on the locust too and get the other stuff if time and space permit. I hardly see any locust around here so I would have jumped on that right off the bat.

;lol She is.

I split a bunch of Ash and Locust last March. It has been piled up, not stacked yet. Took my mc gauge and checked both species in October. Ash was at 28 and the Locust was in the 30s, around 35? Can't remember the exact number, but I remember being surprised at the level both "quick drying" species were at. Long and short is that I would not be planning to use the Locust next year if it were me.

Key phrase here "not stacked yet" if you have Black Locust rather than Honey Locust and you had stacked it you would be drier than that for sure. Wood needs to breathe to dry It can not breathe well when it is piled.

Truth. However the pieces checked were off the top of the pile so not much different than if they were stacked properly. My 2-3 year old stuff is coming in at 19%. The locust is black locust.
