I love the look and feel of the soapstone on my wood stove. I understand that it can be scratched and chipped pretty easily, but is a fairly easy DIY fix. Does anyone have soapstone counter tops or any experience with them?

I don't know of anyone who has them but talk to Woodstock and they will give you some good knowledge about them. And yes, scratches and stains for sure are easy fixes. Not sure about chipping though.

That's exactly where I was planning on ordering them. :) I was just wondering what living with them every day is like. I'm not fond of granite, and when the stove is cool enough I pet it, LOL. I just love the texture of the stuff. My sister has granite, but I really like the way soapstone looks. I'll have to give Woodstock a call, and ask if any of them have it in their homes.

For sure Melissa, they won't give you any bull.

They're the most honest company I've ever had the pleasure of dealing with. Very, very, hard to find these days.

....and let us know what you find out. Total kitchen rennovation is in the plans for us and this is something I need input on for sure.

I have a soapstone woodstove and I installed / built a granite countertop and granite kitchen gas stove.

My question would be cleaning.. and how you feel about 'normal use discoloration".

The polished granite is easy to clean. My gas stove burners are installed in holes in the granite counter top and the pot grates have 2 small pins that fit into small holes I drilled in the granite, so they are easy to pick up and move. The granite is VERY easy to clean from cooking spills and spatters, and looks great after 15 years.

I have several pieces of extra soapstone on top of the woodstove and we often put mugs or dishes on them, They have become noticeably discolored after several years, as has the stove top where missed etc. I'm fine with that but someone might not like their kitchen countertops to have some marks and discolorations. I'd be OK with it, and I'm thinking of replacing a very discolored Butcher Block section of counter with soapstone. But Your Reaction May Vary...

Thank you, Terry. That's exactly what I want to learnt, how it handles day to day use. I'm going to give WS a call in a few days and see what they say. I've read a bunch of different stuff on soapstone, and some places say it is so dense that it can't stain, some places say it's so soft that it'll look like it's been in a battle. I think some of it depends on how much it's been polished. What I like about it (other than it's silky feel) is that it's totally inert. So you don't need to worry about what cleaner you use or if citris acid gets on it. I like to wash my counters with a spray bottle filled with water and bleach. Cheap and effective, plus I like the smell. Makes me feel like the counter is clean. I know I'm weird. ;)
