I'm building an in law above my garage 24x28. It'll be mostly used in the summer but will be used on an occasional weekend during winter.

I've been looking around for a source of heat that can accomodate my needs. I'm looking at everything except oil.

Preferably, I'd like something that could keep the place at 45-50 degrees during the time it's not in use, so I'd like something that I could set a thermostat low. I'd love to make a pellet stove work, but I'm not sure if its worth the hassle.

Pellet stoves require regular cleaning and maintenance. It is defiantly not a set and forget type stove. IMO I would be look at a gas stove if I was you for your application. Also if you are using this as a bedroom, solid fuel burning devices are not allowed.

yeah - my mother/father have a pellet stove in the place that they are renting, and it requires just a bit too much maintenance for them. I would go with a propane/natural gas Rinnai Monitor heater for that kind of space. Will heat the whole space and will be cheap to run.

My heating suggestion for an in law apartment is don't!
