Just curious, since if I leave the air almost fully closed I will have a nice brown colored firebox I the morning. But if I leave the air open at about 1/2, the box will be totally light grey. Both scenarios the glass is nice and clean.

If I turn the air down (1991 Englander 28-jc insert), the firebox is usually dark brown/ black, and the windows are usually darkened. Not always, sometimes it gets hot enough to burn it off, but if the air is more open, the firebox is clean as are the windows. I always run it low at night because we like the house cool, and if it is run higher, there wont be enough coals left to start in the morning.

Usually my firebox is a light grey, bricks are clean except in the back where I load a split on the floor of the firebox sometimes thats black sometimes its clean. Glass never gets dirty, I cleaned the glass on Christmas Eve and havent touched it since.

Here is my end of overnight burn. Almost white or to quote Brotherbart, it looks like a bag of flour was thrown in.
