Hi Jack,
didnt say what kind of wood, but have made one myself out of a small softwood log, burnt green and for ages and found you can even adjust the burn by turning into or away from the wind. Lit mine with a small piece of firelighter, easy !
 
We ride snowmobiles and that would be a nice way to cook hot dogs along the trail.

Looks a bit like a swedish candle/torch to me, you get the flat top and a burn which will warm you too:

Similar thing woodchip, but burns a bit longer I think :)
well mine seemed to do, was green wood tho.

Swedish candle smokes though, This really doesn't.
