Anyone else seeing this?

Usually some add at the top and one at the bottom. Very generic and usually hearth oriented. This on my iPad. I have a spam block. Don't know if that works for forums etc. but my e mail is fairly clean. No sexes stuff, no phony investment schemes.

I get... pellet vent pro, win a free ton, anby hobbyking dot com ( because I fly those damned rc planes)

CT - I got the same ad this evening and thought it was strange for this site.

Does anyone else see the irony in this site running the 'Electric Heater' ads on here? I mean kudos to the site owners for selling the ad space, but geez - who at the electric heater companies is the genius who decided to spend the company's marketing $$ on a hardcore wood and pellet forum site? It's like running an ad for McDonald's 'McRib' sandwich outside a bar-b-q joint in Kansas City. I guess even dumb people have rights too. We should all just click on the ads just to run up the bill.

Site profile likely says old men with money frequent hearth.com hence that particular ad.

Alexa has this to say:
Based on internet averages, hearth.com is visited more frequently by males who are in the age range 55-64, have no college education and browse this site from home.

And get wallets stolen at Home Depot a few times per week

Viagra ads....everywhere I turn! I wonder if you can OD on that stuff......

I only get furnace ads. Kind of reminds me of the time, years ago, when I left my apartment and found that all the cars on my street had flyers on their windshields- except mine. Made me feel left out.

That's what my wife just said too.....LOL
This laptop is actually my company computer and my I.T. firm allows NO cookies on it whatsoever...Now if it were our family computer...she would want some splaining!

Since the laptop does not allow cookies I'm going to assume that you were not logged in? Lurkers would get an ad at the bottom of the first post on each page. It appears to have moved back up into the middle of the post...

Take a look at this thread:

I didn't get the same ad as you because those ladies don't want us "young" guys...

Key word targets usually (but not always) determine the ads shown. Someone says I will pay $0.01 for the keyword heater then when the ad server sees the content on the page and the keyword heater shows up your ad may get chosen to be shown.

Now if Jimmy Bob also bids for that keyword and says I'll pay $0.02 then Jimmy Bob's ad will get shown.

If you want a lot of the ads to disappear without installing any new software or subscribing to a service you can simply disable javasript. This has some downsides to it but then so does running javascript.

If you sit behind various routers some of them allow blocking requests to and from specific sub domains, domains, groups of sub domains, or ip addresses.

Some ad serving systems also allow the site showing ads to prevent certain ads from being served on their sites, however this is a whack a mole situation and such ads need to known to the site administration in order for them to block them.

Meanwhile, remember there is no free lunch and hosting a website isn't a cost free activity.

Though this is true, web hosting doesn't exactly break the bank either. For a site like Hearth, I'd assume there was some design and development cost overhead, but it looks like most of the content was crowdsourced to the Hearth community (these forums included). Then it's just domain and hosting space, which shouldn't be more than a few hundred a year at most.

I'm guessing that the advertisers and sponsers make this site very profitable. And while that's fine, there's no option for me to "turn off" the ads (either by donating or becoming a paid/plus/premium-type member), which is why I resort to Ad-blocking browser plugins.

But, that's just me thinking out loud... My assumptions could be way off, and I'd be happy to do an about-face should any site admins want to chime in.

Depends upon what is needed to drive the site this could be way more than a few hundred a year, but then I haven't looked at hosting costs in about six years and at that time the site I was maintaining required several servers and the yearly cost was in the thousands just for hosting. But maybe software overhead costs have been reduced with all of the fancy stuff available these days but I doubt it, as software tends to get extremely bloated as the hardware gets faster such that the end result is always the push for more hardware.

Other than that, maybe you are right, but something (well actually several little birdies who still suck ad revenue out of the Google and commissions from various endeavors, both in the US and across one of the big puddles) tell me ad revenue is rather erratic in some arenas.

not me i get Windhager ads for Europe's leading wood pellet boiler. Like I would buy a European boiler. I buy American

Good for you, but some of those European units are first class and even your American unit likely contains plenty of stuff from the other side of the big puddles.

Well almost all the parts are probably made else where but thats because we as Americans continue to buy everything made out of the USA and stopped producing in the USA. there is alot of quality merchandise made elsewhere. But we need to support the American made brand and the local shops in your areas to keep people working.

Hard to do these days. Hard to even find a light bulb made here! Specially the CFL's and LED's.

He!!s Bells you can't even make the parts for light bulbs in the US not even in the cheap labor state of Maine:

I knew several people who worked there. Went by the plant many a time.
Oh and those jobs are no longer where they were headed for in the early 2000's they are in the Czech Republic now.

I agree thats because we have been buying everything from everywhere else for so long. we stopped producing anything. Sad but True

And the reason stuff is bought from elsewhere is?

A hint, it wasn't because it wasn't being made here.

PRICE they build it cheaper so everything costs less

sure, but you even see that here with the posts on folks latest "Big Pellet Score".........with high fives all around.....hypocritical? >>

Not necessarily - we do boycott certain pellets that don't burn well, or at all...
And, given a choice, I think most of us would buy local. I have seen quite a few remarks on that point.
