looking at a striker c160. unfortunately, i can't seem to find any pricing online. not looking to spend a fortune, as i have moved to south carolina and will rarely use wood for heat. anyone known any good deals on a small insert? my search fu is out of whack.

What is your budget for the stove?

Well, I am not afraid to spend a little... but I have to draw a line somewhere on a setup that MAY see a total of 30 days of use per year. Kind of a cost to benefit ratio. I'd say I'd like to be in under $1500 total for the setup which leads me to think used may be the key, here. Trouble is, the area is plagued with antiquated dinosaur like stoves on Craigslist. I did turn one search up that seems to be fair... waiting on a response.

We shall see. I'd also be open to a low top or rear exit flue freestanding unit. I believe my fireplace opening is 24.5" high. I like the 602cb, but am having trouble tracking an inexpensive one down.

To add... obviously, the less I have to spend, the better. Looking for bang for the buck, here... Meaning s $900 deal may actually be a better deal then a $400 deal.

Also, the listed rear clearance on the cl ad stove is listed at 11". Forgive my ignorance, but inserts need rear clearance to the chimney?!

Where are you reading the 11" clearance? Are you looking at the freestanding stove specs?

The 1100C is a shallow insert with a small firebox. If their liner is in good condition, this is not a bad deal. Still, if you can go bigger I would unless you only want a chill chaser for a small area. If you want larger, what are the full front and back dimensions of your fireplace including depth top and bottom?

Also is this a masonry or prefab metal fireplace?

I'm not sure about what they really have for a liner. If it is Duraliner, you are golden.

As for the site with clearances, weird. The specs they are listing for inserts are for freestanding stoves. Maybe their web layout person got the data mixed up or had no knowledge of how inserts install?

I know! Sell me your 602! Just happened to think of domething else... I have built in bookshelves on both sides of the hearth- about 12" from the fireplace openings. They extend 8" out. Will there be a side clearance issue? I'll post pics once home. Can I ipload from my mobile or do I use a photo host like Flickr?

Clearances will definitely need to be considered both to the sides and to the mantel if there is one.

It's best to use the "Upload a File" feature (lower right) if you can. Links for photos often get broken over time.

25" w across the back
29" w across the front
24" h
16" d
12.5" side clearance to bookshelfs
19" top clearance to mantle

There is a strange offset jog in the chimney with a small opening. Looks like a few bricks could easily be removed.

i'm gonna bump this up. looking to get something to put in. honestly, i'd like to use a freestanding unit with a low flue exit. still open to an insert, though. does anyone have much experience with the jotul 602 series? my house is 1100 square feet but i am only needing to actually heat about half of that with a very open floor plan. not too concerned about efficiency- it's gonna be for more of a chill chaser than anything. i'd say it may see 30 days of use with temps rarely dipping below 35-40. i considered the li'l sweetie from vogelzang, but don't appreciate the lack of viewing glass, etc. thoughts?

I have a pre EPA 602 that I have used for a few years before moving it to the greenhouse. Which model are you looking at, the older 602 or the newer 602CB? Your use is similar to the way I use it now in the gh. It's a great little stove and much more controllable than the VG stove. Maybe start a new thread for your needs?

If you are in SC then I would give the guys at www.servicesales.com a call, they are right around the "corner" from you. They have used inserts they get on trade in and sell for good prices or you could ask them what specials they have going, they usually have something on sale. Good guys to work with. Call them as the price over the phone is sometimes different than what is listed online.
