I think Craig's new rule is that if you criticize another member's post (grammer, spelling, content) you must buy an Extend-A-Flue to be re-instated.

He has tons of Forum members but is short on storeroom space.

I don't think proper grammar is a necessity, it actually helps me to gauge what type of person typed the post.

You doing better then me then .................

I have a neighbor that is an English Teacher that can't change an air filter on a car , let alone know where its at.

Its hard to "gauge what type of person" you are talking to in a forum. To me , proper grammar isnt a sign of being smart , but is nice to have on your side.

My wife and i work out very well together , she is the wiz bang on grammar and english and I'm the math wiz but the other of each is not our strong point. Everybody has there strong / stronger areas as so with there less then perfect points.

AH HA, I already have an extend-a-flue on mine ;), does that make me exempt?

Well said Spike. I was just thinking the same thing, but you beat me to it. People on forums often act differently than if you were interacting in real life. Plenty of highly intelligent folks who can't type, spell or concern themselves with grammar when quickly pounding away on the keyboard.

Glad I didn't set grammer & spelling as my thread topic. Could you imagine the weplies....silly wabbit.

The thread has morphed into a really interesting subject. I never realized the sensitivity that some folks would have about spelling or grammar. But it's understandable after 12+ yrs of an education system hopping on one's butt about it. If you think it's bad here, try working in a corporate environment with dozens of emails a day. I come here to relax :)

I drive the kids nuts in class, When they ask "CAN I go to the Bathroom" (a teacher spends a considerable percentage of the day doing potty passes...) I give non-reponsive answers like "I have no idea - are you potty trained?" or equivalent.... Some of them eventually figure out that the correct question is "MAY I go... (usually yes...) others don't get it. This is with kids in 4th grade and up, I'm not as fussy with the younger kids.

In general I don't comment on spelling or grammar, though I try to keep mine as good as I can easily manage. However I do find that bad grammar, especially, slows me down when I'm reading because I have to keep trying to translate it into what the person means. I don't hold it against the person, but it does make me a bit less likely to respond to them if it's a marginal case and they are hard to communicate with.

It's nice to see a kinder and gentler forum again. :)
I use the forum to get some ideas on questions I have. So keep those answers coming because I have many more questions to post. About ready to remove raised hearth from fireplace so I know I'll be posting soon.
Spelling is big on my list as I'm a retired grade school teacher and I'm huked on foniks.
(I can spell, I just don't type all that well)
Oregon got hit by snow today and I think they hung out a closed sign for the entire state :wow:
And I'm finally getting the hang of those smileys.

On the military ASVAB test
I scored 98% on Technical/mechanical
and 50% on clairical.

BeGreen, I didn't see weather news about your area but assume you also have significant snowfall. Looks like 3-4 inches where we are. At least this time we (still) have elexctricity(yes I can spell that word but my keyboard is adding an x everytime I type a xc - there it just did it again.) Stay warm.

Yep, 6-7" with the first snowfall, then 4" yesterday morning. All melting now, good riddance.

Sounds like you have a Frito stuck between the x and c key. Turn the keyboard upside down and try to vacuum it out.

Snow? What's that? Hell, I live in New England and it's snowing in Mexico. Go figure.

I do like this forum very much. You guys are capable of throwing ideas around without biting each others' heads off. Lots of good info here.

As far as spelling, the only problem I have with it is that sometimes it makes it difficult to follow what the person is trying to say if there's no punctuation or misspelled words. Other than that, me dont's care how yous alls spells your words.

Friends don't let friends play the Patriots during playoff season. Whoo hooo!

BTW Goose, in my school when a kid asks if they can go to the bathroom my stock response is "I dunno, but if you can't let me know and I'll send you to the nurse" :eek:hh:

BeGreen, besides having the Jotul stoves I admire you're also a computer genius :) I just looked between the
c and x keys and there was a blob of glue. :red: Removed it and now I can spell correctly(and other words too - yes it's too, not to or two. I know almost everything a 4th grader should know because I taught it to, or is that too, them) :cheese:
I love those smileys. Pretty soon I'll even figure out how to do the quote thing!
Snowing in Mexico - are you kidding. Think I'll go turn my greenhouse off.

Trouble is they'd take me up on it... Have to be careful not to give them openings or excuses to complain about harrassment. The stuff they get away with amazes me, but the things I can do are so limited that it is next to impossible to maintain order if the kids aren't halfway willing....

I had an instructor in collage who when students would ask questions like "is this right or wrong?", his answer was a quick "Yes" without even looking at them or what they were showing him. Virgins would assume he meant it was right, it took a long time for some of them to realize he was answering the question they asked and not the implied question they wanted an answer to. :)

Now and then I do the same thing with the "paper or plastic?" question. Yes.;)

I also give "non-responsive" answers to questions that I believe are fishing for answers rather than actually not knowing how to do something.

What does _____ mean? Means you need to use a dictionary....
How do I ___________? Correctly, I hope!
Whats the answer to (multiple choice question)? A letter! (fill in the blank question) A word!, etc.
I can't find the answer to this question! - I did....

I figure it does the little (not-so) darlings good to hurt their minds a bit.... If it is something where they genuinely don't get it, I'll do my best to help, but I won't do their work for them.
