I currently have an Englander stove, I'm looking to buy another stove would like to buy a Harman. However I've been hearing bad service about Harman.

What is your opinion about their service department?

You cannot call them and get a response, AFAIK. They want all service done through the dealer. If the dealer sucks, so will your service.

And they have NO ONE on this forum to help you. If you're happy with your Englander, why switch?

I am a tech so I cannot speak to homeowner support but most of your support should come from the dealer and the people that do the service calls. I work on Harmans all the time and think they are a great stove and anytime we have had a warranty calls Harman has covers the part no problem. A good dealer reputation with knowledge of the products they sell is what you want.

Murph, if the stove is under warranty does Harman cover all labor and parts or just parts?

I'm trying to decide if I should buy a new stove or used stove.

All labor and parts are covered at my shop if there is a defect at fault. Harman only pays us so much towards the labor and we cover the rest, the cost of the part is fully covered. That's part of being a good dealer in my opinion.

Harman has no service department, per se. They rely upon their dealer network to support their products. Harman used to offer a fairly extensive training to keep the dealers' service personnel up to snuff on the workings of their stoves, inserts & central heating appliances, but that may have changed since Dane Harman had sell out to Hearth & Home Technologies...Not to worry, tho. You've got plenty of pellet heads here at Hearth.com!

Buy the Harman, as it is a great stove. But buy it with the understanding that once you own it, you are on your own, and any dealer assistance that you do get after the sale can be looked at as a bonus. There will not be anything that goes wrong with your stove that we cannot help you fix right here, and if the stove is under warranty, you will not have to pay for the parts, provided that you get them through your dealer. Hearth&Home does a good job of not cramming their dealers together, so where you buy a harman will probably be limited to two, possibly three dealers in your reasonable geographic region.

Doesn't H&H also own quadrafire? What is their rep with service? On a side note I recently had an issue with my quad and my dealer was pretty good to respond, but I'm curious if you would classify quads as you do harmans with regards to service.

I was able to speak with a Harman tech last year, you just need to know how to look up a number and be willing to hold for awhile. He did answer my question about set back thermostats.

I got an answer from Harman through the web site within a day on a stove question I had last fall. My closest dealer is 150 miles. P-series is straight forward design and easy to repair and maintain.

All of Harman's service is through your dealer. That is why you need to talk to a dealer and see if his service and work will be in your acceptance.

Thank you for all the inputs. I hear good things about Harman product just not so good about their service.

Harman does not service the units they produce directly....they require the selling dealer to do the service. If for some reason, the selling dealer and owner get crossthreaded, sometimes they will coordinate a repair with another dealer. Other comapnies do it different ways, pros and cons to each.

I have a dealer 5mi away. Big fat showroom. No installs and no service. I have another dealer 15mi away. Big fat showroom. No installs and no service. There are however according to the closest dealer- 3 qualified service reps in my area. All have chimney cleaning services. My question to Harman would be why is your stove so expensive and why not just sell stoves on the internet or Home Depot if your going let all these people call themselves dealers when all they have is a showroom. I have another dealer approx 40mi away who has a full service business selling pellet stoves. They sell, install and service. My last trip there they had 90 Tons of Pellets sitting in the warehouse. They sell Lopi, Enviro, Kozy, Avalon, Hearthstone, Lennox, Thelin, Enerzone and so many other brands I can't remember. They do not sell Harman. I asked why once and they simply said-great stove but overpriced.

"great stove- overpriced"....ll coming from a dealer who doesnt sell them......interesting....well, I guess its a plus that the competing dealer likes the stove, isnt it?, and the only thing wrong they can come up with is it costs too much.....:p

As for the other dealers who dont install or service, well, i couldnt agree more with you more. Only thing I can come up with there is they are "old" dealers....a more recent dealer would be required to install and service, or at least do service

That is how HHT rolls.

I have two Dealers within 25 miles of me either way the one thats North of me Rockys Stove Shop Augusta Maine has bent over backwards to be a great dealer install was unbelieveable super job and when i go to their shop for what ever they make sure to ask how is everything if anything goes wrong we are here for you ...but thats just it NOTHING EVER GOES WRONG ! I Love the Harman Stove other than cleaning snd thats not all that bad either !
