what all do i need for chimney?

Im trying to come up with a parts list to do a basement install. The chimney will go out through the basement wall and up along the side of the house. Im thinking it would be cheaper to buy the parts online or from homedepot then to pay the local hearth store prices. Even though I will have to get them to do the actual install
 
If you're not going to DIY the install, talk to the installer first. They can't take responsibility for the work unless they have some control over what they install, and if you miss a critical part then you could cause delays, necessitate an extra trip and spoil your expected savings. Besides, they can buy parts just as cheaply as you can, so you can probably negotiate some adjustment if their everyday prices are high.

Most shops income is a balance of mark up and labor rate. If the store can't confirm the supply chain on the material for liab ins purposes they may flat out say no, or charge you a higher labor rate to cover the missing markup on the parts. Get 3 quotes and start the negotiation.

Only if you do the labor order online if you have a installer do it they will use there parts only. They can not and will not warranty any parts they did not order.

For that kind of installation I wouldn't mess around. With a qualified installer or mason, your insurance company won't give you a hassle.
 
I agree with topoftheriver, don't mess around. Our dealer used the better quality parts that Home Depot does not carry, even though it may be the same manufacturer. I would pay the extra and have the dealer get the parts and do the install. Insurance could be a factor in this as they may ask who did the install. Just my opinion.
 
with the hassle and expense of a chimney, is another route to just use a direct vent appliance instead?

I thought this too...then my installer asked me to get him the quote from the retailer I was going to order from. He got me a thicker liner for the same price...basically cut his markup a bit...because he understood I was trying to SAVE $$ and also cause it would make his job easier, to work with products he knew well. Worth a try?

It is a point. But pellet stoves cost as much as woodstoves in many cases. In my view, the woodstove has greater ambience with less noise. Wood is cheaper than pellets. It is also fun to do, at least for me.
 
Im with tooftheriver on this one I get wood pretty much for free and I enjoy cutting and splitting. for some reason I feel bad having a hearth store come over to give me an estimate and not end up getting the product there trying to sell me. But I guess that's there job so I guess im gonna get a couple estimates. Do you think they would have a problem installing a chimney to a wood stove that I bought somewhere else. Like im thinking im gonna get one of the timber ridge(englander 30) stoves since they get such good reviews on this sight and they seem really inexpensive.
