Recently purchased a Harman XXV. Having a custom hearth built and wondering how big the pad needs to be. It will be installed in the corner. My dealer said they usually use a 36", but that seems too small.
Based on my measurements, the pad needs to be 48", but that is assuming I go with the Harman recommendation of 6.5" to each wall from the back corners of the stove.
As far as performing maintenance goes, does anyone have recommendations for placing it farther from the wall, or should 6.5" be enough?
If it helps, I am only 5'7" and athletic, so I would probably need less space the move around than most people.
Obviously help from XXV owners would be great, but any input is certainly welcome.

My corner install is the minimum 6.5". Getting inside the stove for any length of time is difficult. Maybe if you were a contortionist, just maybe. Had the floor space been available I would have brought it out another foot or installed non corner. The room has wood flooring so to make things easier I covered the entire bottom of the hearth pad with thick felt. The harder stuff used on furniture legs and the like. After doing that I can slide the entire pad, stove and all, away from the corner for easy access. There is just no way I could comfortably work on the stove otherwise.

Mine will be on a cut out portion of wall to wall carpet, so there will be no sliding it out. This seems like it could be a problem. If I bring it out any more, I will have to use a 56" pad, which causes problems with doing stonework on the walls, since there is a window in the way.

You may be able to modify my approach and use carpet gliders instead.

I will probably shoot for 10" off the walls from each corner. Considering stonework will add 4 inches to wall thickness, I suppose we will have to forgo the stonework on the walls. Maybe just go with tile work, or leave it as is. It will save money anyway.

I just did my p61 on a custom corner 44" hearth and it has plenty of room Intially it looked very tight due to the spacing requirements. While we have different stoves I was misled by some of the dimensions and want to point out some FAQ's. On a corner install the distance is from the main stove front opening edges, not edge of stove, also 6" from glass forward not the actual stove.

Manual does say 36" "with optional side heat protection"

The biggest issue I am having is with the glass to front of protection measurement. If I measure from the glass forward I clear 6 inches. If I measure from the left or right edge of the viewing glass to the side of the pad, it is less than 6". The manual says there must be 6" of floor protection to each side of the stove, but the brochure shows only 2" is needed.
This is getting confusing.

You sound i the same boat I was confused. I swore it wouldn’t fit on a 44 but i have plenty of extra room due to the real dimension compared to the stated. When my stove company came to assess the location they gave me a dimension and I went nuts trying to make it work. And it wouldn’t. Harman said it will fit on a 36" corner. It wasn’t till i read and re read the manual and found the *'s . Clearance is from the door opening. Not sure what dimensions your planning but i went with a 44" due to the wall dimensions and went 33" on the sides with a 17" front. tape 1.JPGtape 1.JPGtape 2.JPG

Thanks for the help Mike. I was planning on going up over baseboard heat just like you did. The XXV is a little bigger, but I was planning on a 49" 2x6 riser with bluestone on top hanging 1.5" over the outer edges, making it 50.5 inches.
Based on what your experience was, it sounds like that will be enough.

I was able to use a 40" hearth (wall sides) and make minimum clearances. As you can see not much access room to work with.

About 15" but went with the extra side protection since I had ordered and it looks nice for the $80

Sure enough. I called my dad, and his XXV is 4" short of Harman's claimed depth. Thanks for the help.

Make a template of the actual fire box area they use for dimension makes it alot easier. that box in the picture was very close to the p61 area THEN i figured i coulls measure from the door opening not the stove edge. that 2-3" on each side make a huge difference in what in clearance. Also I didnt cut the rug. My rug guy said I'd have to run the tack strips all the way around and stretch the rug up to it. He said leave it there and when we rerug the room he would cut it around the hearth and rug to it.

Just a ?? sure you can get the blue stone in 50" I see alot of stuff 48"

I have a piece of cardboard cut to match the width and depth that Harman provides. My father has the same stove, and he uses a 48" corner pad. He says he has no problem with clearances. I have a friend who is a mason. He is building me a pad on top of the riser I am going to build. He is the one cutting the rug, I will ask him, if leaving it is an option.

7" from the corners to the walls/blinds on a 48" pad. Could have done a way smaller pad and been fine.
That makes me feel a lot better. I guess I can proceed without concern.
Thanks

My stove is not a corner install, but the pad size is 41"x41".
Would not go any smaller for sure.

Slate and bluestone pads look awesome with this stove.
Can't wait to see pics when you are done.

i have a p43 it is at minium from the wall it is as cool as cool can be i understand ur worries but pellet stoves are safe imo

Just had it installed today. Went with a 49.5" single piece of 1.5" bluestone corner pad. Got 13.5" from each back corner to the wall, and 11" from the glass to the front. That should leave enough room for the future stone addition to the walls.

how did this not get said yet???

"How many btu's does the toaster oven throw"? :)
