I hope your right! I have trouble identifying by the bark. I got it last night in the dark, three loads of main trunk in my one-ton, must be 35-40 pieces between 14 and 24 diameter. I couldn't tell what it was, there were no leaves. The guys who whacked it loaded it up for me, they said the same thing, hard maple. Can't beat that unless it was split, huh?

Lucky man. Good find

Thanks guys! I have learned so much from lurking on this site over the years! Only I still have trouble with wood species. I've posted only like a dozen times. Can't thank all the characters here enough. Especially begreen bogydave jags(i'm with Jags, just whack the sucker! I love it) scotty overkill firefighter jake backwoods savage and a whole bunch others. You guys are the chit!
Never knew how great it is to heat with wood until I was in a friends home one winter with a woodburner.I put an insert in the next summer in that crazy fireplace that just made our home colder! My kids haven't been sick in years. That was not the case heating with NG forced air. We were cold all the time, had the flu, pnuemonia, etc, someone always sick . 66*F was 'warm' in those days. And still had $300 gas bills! Now its 75*f in the morning when we get up. I only use NG when we come home after a few days at our cottage, just to warm the place up while I'm starting a fire. The wife loves the heat from wood too, helps her arthritis. She even helps me stack! Now if I could only get some leg to go with the beer.......

My sweeth tooth just started throbbing at those photos.................... I'm going maple too!

Good eye applesis. Yes that's a shepherd, a sable. She snuck in while I was taking pics. We have two of them, Samson and Delilah. Deli always inspects the haul, looking for something sweet. She loves the honey locust from an earlier haul it seems, and now she seems to like maple! While I split, she looks for the tastiest morsel of wood that comes out. Sam retrieves splits for me when they fly off the chopping block, it's a game to him. I've been trying to train 'em to stack, but they'd rather lay in the sun and chew.
I guess that's another good thing about CSS my own wood, the dogs have a good time too!

Thanks SharpMaul. While you continue to learn, so will we!

Just reading about living without wood heat makes me shiver. And you are right about the sickness. I recall when we tried going without wood heat and it seems every winter the colds and flu paid us many visits. Also I hate it when the house is not at least into the 70's for comfort. I pity those who keep their thermostats at 60 or below. That is a poor way to live today.

Now as for the wife helping with the stacking. Many years ago I put my foot down. She can help with many things about heating with wood but there are 3 things she won't do.

1. There is no way on God's green earth that she is going to run the chain saw.
2. She is not going to be lifting heavy logs! She can do the light stuff and I'll do the heavy work. However, I do let her roll some of the big logs either by hand or via cant hook. She also has fell in love with the log tongs! Me too.
3. There is no way she is going to help me stack wood! She is a very poor stacker.
