Pellet stove heated water

You just got your stove working. You really want to open a big can of worms talk about using-converting a pellet stove to heat water

This is feasible if you're willing to cut holes in your stove, though I'm not sure with a model as old as yours.

You may want to think about a pellet boiler.

I don't think its logical to heat domestic hot water with a pellet unit. During the summer while your heating the water it will still put heat into the dwelling. Unlike a water heater that is designed to put the heat into the water.

No idea on your setup, but a bit of info.


My folks heated their water with a wood stove for almost 30 years and now do the same with a coal stove. It just amounts to a loop of tube in the firebox or in the air ducting.

The stove sits in the basement and has ducts running in the house... I guess a wood furnace and now a coal furnace? Anyhow the water heater is just a few feet from the stove.

On the wood stove it was a loop of type K copper tube on the side of the firebox inside the stove. Now I know everyone is gonna ask, how did it not melt? I have no idea!
On the coal stove it's a loop of stainless over the top of the firebox, inside the stove.

It worked great for how stupidly simple it is. In the summer the electric water heater made hot water, in the winter it was turned off and just used as a storage tank. We were a family of 5 and I can only remember a few times where there wasn't enough hot water.
Most of the time for showers it would amount to running the cold full blast and mixing in hot water because it was so hot.

Yes, I was in on the rebuild of the stove-hopper fire, bent ash hopper etc. Hence my reply #2

I heat my water all summer with my PB105. The Kedel boiler is also designed to heat water and will even scale down it's output to do so.

X2, I fire the boiler once a day using a zoned Superstor tank burning about a 1/2 bag a day, IMHO, inexpensive DHW.
