I made a thread the other day about closing in my fireplace with pics and a member here called coog brought it to my attention that I had insufficient top on my hearth. This site has been a life saver for me on this project. Anyway I have been looking for some Micore 300 fiber board and cant find it anyplace around here.I even had out tool purchaser at the machine shop where I work check on it.He found one place that had some. $48 for a sheet which is great but they want $238 to ship it which I think is nuts. I called a fireplace store about 35 miles from me and he doesn't carry it but he does carry Hearth and home HX3..He says they usually only put one layer down but my manual calls for two layers of 1/2" Micore 300.My manual says 1" of hearth and home HX4 is fine. They carry HX3,Anyone know what the difference is?

I believe they are both refractory boards and do the same thing. From googling it the boards look very similar although it does not appear to be a proper substrait for tyling on.

http://www.ctioa.org/reports/fr77.html good info here.

I am planning on plywood first for a base,Then two 1/2" pieces of fiber board then top that with 1/2" of cement board then the stone on that.

Try second hand construction stores. Look for office cubicle panels. Quite a lot of them are made with micore. I found some of them for $5 each. If you rip the fabric off it will ook like pressed newspaper but most of the panels will have an ink strip marking that says micore 300. The makeup of the panels reminded me of the old celotex panels they used to put under mobile homes.

I have looked,I actually live out in the country in a small town.Nothing like that around here.

How much do you need? Is it going to be sandwiched in between something?

I just seen your hearth on the other post. If you measure it I may have enough to cover the hearth area. I had some left over and I offered it up to anyone that wanted it with the caveat that I would cut it into 12" tiles and ship the cheapest way. But you could lay the tiles out and put hardiboard over it.

It looks like you need 2 layers at 10 ft2 each. I have enough to do 1 layer. I have 1 @ 25"x32", 1 @ 19" x 24", and 1 @ 10" x 22". It comes out to 10 ft2. You are welcome to it if you want.

Thats very generous of you and I may take you up on that but I do have two calls in, One to a fireplace store and one to our local hardware store. I think the fireplace store has some that will work. Its hearth and home HK3.
