Feeling the Heat

We installed our OAK today and the stove has been burning HOT. Our dealer took off our termination cap as it was also restricting air flow. The cap we used was the Selkirk VP 3 inch cap. What is a good cap we can use that won't restrict air flow?

I have a horizontal exits on my stoves and am trying to get someone to get me some dimentions on a jet cap that I can build out of heavy stainless instead of the over classed beer cans that are sold. Your termination horizontal or vertical? Will see how fast this thread goes down hill now that I got beer included:)

Hope the stove has been OK. I know you had issues... As many times the dealer has been there NOW they remove the termination cap??

Thanks for the link Smokey. That gave dimentions or enough of one for me to get proper cone angle etc

Mommyof4 there is a cone cap termination cap for the line of venting you have: http://www.northlineexpress.com/3-selkirk-vp-pellet-vent-pipe-exit-cap-3vp-ec-3vp-ec.html but make certain that you can use it where your vent exits, sometimes just using a 45 degree elbow pointed down is enough.

I haven't seen to many jet caps with dimensioned pictures or diagrams Bioburner.
X2 on that Selkirk cap. That is what comes in the DT venting and it works great! Even has a nice bug screen mesh!

How quick were you planning on starting fabrication? Meant to get out there today to pull it to get dimensions and pics - Sorry didn't happen. Have to get pallet of pellets in AM but can try to do it in the afternoon...

The link provided by Smokey gave a dimension that I can work off. Will cut one or two if I have enough tubing and weld one next week when the outside temps are supposed to get above freezing. Finally, at or above normal temps. Maybe find the cell phone I lost while moving snow.

My son lost his cell phone when he went ice fishing this winter... little chance of finding it as his buddy was following him on another machine so likely buried:( or swimming with the fishes!

No Venturi, just direct vent. I don't see any flow problems, maybe because its 4", and I'm not worried about sparks as it blacktop and gravel all around my exit. I'm not sure if that's all the parameters, but I took my chances over a snowslide/ice dams breaking my term cap off.

The effect of the venturi can lower the exaust preasure and increase the velocity to help keep the ash from the side of the house. In my case vinyl siding that ash loves to stick to. 3 inch system, 45 and 2 foot section.

Bioburner: My stove's termination is horizontal.

gfreek: The stove seems to be working really well. The fires not going out and it's even cycling now! It felt so good waking up and feeling warmth again. :)

Is it possible to grind the spot welds off the end cap and make it to 45 degree angle and tack weld or screw it back on?? Or previously mentioned a 45* elbow..Rain or snow should be kept out... Glad to hear the stove is running good now....

Will the rain/snow affect the venting if it gets in?
A horizontal pipe won't hold water very well but snow will get in if the stove is not running. But if its snowing I would bet the the heat is on. A direct wind can mess up a vacuum sensing system if the pipe is close to the house. My Bixby would have a fit with a direct wind till I extended the pipe another 2 foot away from the house. If you can gat away with a simple 45 downward elbow it would probably the least problematic and easiest to maintian. Just cover it in the off season to keep out the unwanted pests.

Snow and water are not likely to get in unless it is truly horizontal precipitation and you are venting directly into the wind (and even in this case that particular vent cap will tend to push such things away from the vent). Normal exhaust temperatures and the natural draft in the vent system should keep anything out of the venting otherwise.

Got some dimensions from our cone termination cap for 3" pellet pipe:
Overall total length 10"
Overall length of cone: 6"
Diameter at base of cone: 5 1/2"
Diameter at top of cone: 3 1/4"
Three support tabs approx. 1" from base of cone
Internal pipe extends beyond base of cone and has screened end but didn't try measuring as stove was not shut down! If you want these, let me know and will try for shut-down earlier in the day.

That seems differant than the one Smokey linked to. More like the one I had seen somewhere. Maybe a picture at your leasure. I know others are probably curious. Thanks

The one I linked to was for a particular vent system and is a jet cap. There are tons of termination caps just about every maker has several for each type of termination orientation.

The one I had seen posted somewhere I thought looked long and sexy. Like a old firemans nozzle or the exaust of a fox jet engine or maybe something Lady Gaga would wear:)
