Not just eagle feathers but all migratory birds... Eagles get more notice due to national symbol and being on the endangered list (pesticides from the 60s played a big part in this). Due to their importance in many native traditions, there is a black market similar to elephant ivory. Looking at this treaty, I've inadvertantly broken this law by sending a bird nest to school with the kids!

Edit: The bird nest was from a robin who was finished with it as her babies learned to fly. Knew about the law with regards to eagle feathers but not that it covered all migratory birds - CBC had it as a reference to a case on poaching in BC; game birds are OK if you have the appropriate hunting license. My "spare" daughter is First Nations and I used to work with First Nations teenagers - Eagle feathers are received for important deeds/life events.

Non listed use of DDT was the culprit. Weak egg shells. Farmers were using DDT to control mice and rats and so the higher doses got into the ecosystem. Would put down the powder along a wall and the rodents would lick it off their feet.

It goes even further in a lot of jurisdictions. Unless you have legally obtained any wild animal part it is a major crime to have any wild animal part in your possession. Legally obtained means by taking the animal yourself in a legal manner or having been made a gift of the part by someone else who has legally taken the animal. (Taken means dispatched as in killed). Major fines, jail time, future restrictions, and confiscation of property used in otherwise (non legal) taking a wild animal.

I don't mind the snow so much as the fact my area has been at least 10 degrees below normal. Add insult to injury area is supposed to get around 10 inches of work today. We need the moisture but would prefer April showers.

my good arm is kaput from shoveling snow! yes, we need the moisture for spring & summer so we don't have a super dry conditions in the summer. living in the boonies, forest fires are always on your mind!!!!!

Not looking forward to the expected snow here either. Two of those fly boys for the water bombers in Ontario are my brother-in-law and nephew. Brother-in-law was featured in the Science North IMAX film they did on the water bombers.

Hat's off to both of them. That is some serious stuff they are flying through.

Not to mention the tricky part of skimming the lake to scoop the water. Got to watch them up close when there was a small fire west of us from a lightening strike ... scooping from the lake in front of us! Stressful with it that close but they got a quick knock-down.

No picnic on the ground either. Hope the water keeps coming on a timely basis. Shipping on the Mississippi has been restricted. Shut down good number of firework shows for community events.

spring is definitely on the way. my ducks came back a few days ago and i saw the neighbors groundhog out running around the lawn. well its not *their* groundhog but for some reason he never leaves that property. no complaints as long as he leaves my veggie garden alone.

Last time I had a marmit on my property it ran up under my desiel van and I attempted to scare it out by turning the engine over and the cold engine fired up. Ground hog. New belt and fan shroud and a trip to shop to get hole fixed in the radiator.

Last Sat and Sunday had 50+ temps, bight blue cloudless sky ! Took advantage to get out and enjoy the weather both days and on Sunday had the first sighting of both eagles coming and going from the nest.

Hopefully wont be long now for the warm weather to come and stay !

Hope you guys are right about the warmer weather. I am burning my last bag of pellets today. My friend has two tons extra, so I could buy some from him. Last Sunday in Cincinnati it was 60F, so winter is about over. You boys in North Tonawanda make me home sick, from Wheatfield, N.Y.

May want to get some extra bags from your friend ... when our kids were little, I used to wash their sorel boots up to store til the next winter. Never failed, no matter when I washed them in April, would always get one more good sized snow fall<>
