I started working on a Oak (white I think) today. It's behind a friends house and into the woods about 100'. It was a blowdown from either Irene or Sandy but I'm leaning towards Irene. Once the ground dries out and hardens I will be able to get my truck right up to the tree line so removal will be fairly easy.
However, I've been aching to cut since the snow finally melted so I fired up my new 372 and cut a load. I had to wheel barrow it out of the woods and about 150' feet to my truck but I needed the exercise anyway. Time was not on my side so it was a small haul.
Heres the first load. Many more to follow.

Nice work - those rounds look perfect. Should split really well for you.

Definitely white oak, great wood but 3 years to extract it's maximum.

I agree 100% ohlongarn. One thing I learned on over here on Hearth is Oak need's a minimum of 2 years but 3 and up is better. I already have some Red Oak seasoning for 14-15. I have some Pin and White for 15-16 and this white will go towards my 16-17 pile. It's going to be Maple for 13-14 as I'm new to this and I've only been building up my wood supply for the last year.

It doesn't get much prettier than that. Perfect looking load of w/o

Such uniform, straight sections and rounds. Will definitely make for nice splitting.

You're well on your way for sure,my oak stash ranges in age from 15mo,to 5 years, although I am just finishing up some white oak that was css in 2004,burns phenomenal hardly any ash after a full load. You'll reap the return on your work sooner than you think, but never stop looking for the next score.

Well said longarm

One of the best woods God ever put on earth!! I love the vanillish smell of it when cutting/splitting! It takes quite a while to season but its worth the wait!!

The amount of work put into getting the wood out is directly proportional to it's heat value :)

BTU for the particular wood is the same but it heats you up several times getting it out.

Like you Hal, I look at it as like it's much better than a gym membership. (Pay's me $$$ back ;)

That is one sweet haul! Definitely white oak. Wish I had a hundred of those.

I probably have 3-4 more loads like that left in the tree. Then I'll work the large oak limb that blew off a nearby tree.

That looks like nice workout material for you and your X27!

I agree. I've already decided the splitter will sit this one out and I'll split those by hand.

Now those rounds are what we call a 10 gentlemen ;)
