I notice on some Class A roof flashing they have some of them vented. I have just finished installing a Supervent chimney system in a 3x5 foot exterior chase with a fire stop at the first level. It has a metal top cap. I did not use a vented flashing as I didn't want to have holes where insects and rain could get in just a storm collar. Now as an after thought... I was wondering should I have used a ventilating flashing instead to let the hot air escape from within the chase? Is this really needed?

I wouldn't worry about it. Every time we installed a vented flashing, we used aluminum tape to seal off the airflow slots, for exactly the reasons you cited - bugs & rain. Others may chime in now...
That's odd! Don't you think the manufacturer put those vents there for a reason? If nothing else, from a liability stand-point.
If you are using a chase, then no flashing is needed. You will be fine as long as the chase cover has some fall, and the storm collar is sealed up good. For the record, I don't think the vents are necessary either. It's just not a good idea to intentionally alter a factory part, if anything happens in the future, thats the first thing an insurance guy or company rep would point there finger at.
Thanks guys. I put the storm collar on that went with the pipe. It was big enough to cover the chase top hole. 24 hrs later the sky opened up. So far so good

I have the vented flashing - didn't modify it and haven't had any issues so I don't know if I'd worry about it too much either way. But on the other hand, now that you all mention the critter thing, I might revisit this when I fix the shingling issue I have up there...

I realize that, but it seems there were a BUNCH of flashings that the company held onto after we switched brands of Class A, from Metalbestos to ICC Excel. As someone else noted, ICC flashings are not vented. So when we installed the older versions on ICC Class A, we blocked the vent slots. The owner approved & HIS company is the one liable for any damage caused by the modifications...

I see lots of chimneys and flashings mix/matched, never seen an issue. But i always recommend the flashing that was made for the pipe. CYA
