I ran a VC Defiant 1A for a couple years and was happy with the output. Only issue was consumption rate of wood. Sold it after getting a new EPA stove, and for decent money. Well after experiencing a cold house during last years cold snaps, I vowed I would get another Defiant if I came across one. Took a year of browsing CL and Ebay, but finally got one yesterday. It is in at least as good of shape as the one I sold, and has the heat shield which my old one did not. Won't need it this year, but it will be ready to come to the plate when it hits those 20s come next year. Pics to follow.

So the Englander 30 would not heat your house?

The 30 could not do nearly what the Defiant did. May have been spoiled by the VC and/or expected too much from the 30. Check my threads, I have posted the details on the battles I have waged trying to keep the house above 64 when the outside temps fall under 30 for daily highs. The 30 runs nice, but just can't do what I expected based on the specs. Best way to detail the difference is that when the 30 is running at altitude, you can sit in front of it at 3 feet and maintain your position. When the Defiant is cruising if feels the same from 8 feet away. That old girl chucks BTUs. Really can't wait to get it up and running next season. I plan to tinker with the reburn a bit and try to make it more effective. I can not complain about how the other Defiant ran though. When it was to temp, there was almost zero smoke out of the stacks. I really don't think the 30 does any better.
