I have an opportunity to cut down a plum tree. Its about 30 ft tall with a gnarly twisted trunk.

Anyone know if plum is good to burn? It sure looks like it will be tough to split with my ax.

Closely related to Apple,Cherry,Pear,Hawthorn etc.Quite good & well worth the effort.Save a few chunks for the smoker or BBQ grill.Excellent for poultry, not bad with beef or pork too.

According to this page the oven-dry specific gravity of plum is about 0.61, which puts it between white ash and red oak. It'll burn.

As others have said . . . just about any fruit tree is wicked good to burn in a woodstove . . . some better than others . . . and of course you may want to save some aside for smoking purposes.

I've burnt apple, plum, fruit cherry, peach and pear wood.
Haven't had enough of it to note anything extraordinary about them.
None have jumped back out of the stove.

Darn good thing they didn't jump out...that there would "plum" scare me.

I did burn a whole plum tree . Alot like apple as many have said.
Let it season. You can split it. I remember cutting the trunk pieces short,
made it much easier to split.

Plum is no good with one year of seasoning. 2+ or more like oak. Smoke is not as nice as apple. But thats like a tobacco thing. different tastes. I remember it having alot of ash. But maybe not if I had waited 3yrs to burn it.
this tree coppices horribly. Like crab apples and aspen.
Take the stump with you if you dont want to be cutting it down again in five years.
